\'The Way Of A Ship\'

Just about finished this (part) fictional account of a square- rigger going round Cape Horn in the late 19thC. By Derek Lundy. Very similar story to another of my favourites 'The Cape Horn Breed' by Capt. W.S. Jones. Depicting the unimaginable suffering of the crews of these ships trying to weather Cape Horn.

Have you read "Two years before the mast" by Edmund Danna it tells the same story from the American perspective. The author trained to be a solicitor gave it up before qualifying and went to sea. He wrote about the seamans lot when he returned, it shocked a lot of Americans afterwards he was feted by seamen in every port he visited. Its a long time since I read the book it may have been four years befor the mast - enjoy.

You're right about the title but it's by Richard Henry Dana and it's available to read online here.

Yes, I read Danas' book years ago. In fact Lundy writes his story through the eyes of his grandfather who was a seaman in the late 19thC. He uses many references to Dana, Conrad and Melville in his book. Its a very worthwhile read.
