This book by Rear Admiral E N Poland is quite fascinating; it covers the development at the shore establishment HMS Vernon, Portsmouth of torpedos, mines and their countermeasures from 1872 on old ' wooden wall ' hulks to 1986, including the wars inbetween - for instance having to move out to Roedean girls school when Portsmouth was bombed in WWII - and the often tricky courageous acts required to work out what commercial rivals or wartime foes were up to, extremely well researched and written.
