I wonder if you can give any pointers on any of this, would be eternally obliged etc etc etc.

Generator cuts out after various times from 1 minute to 20 minutes, fuel seems ok and filters. Also it does not seem to want to start, dead as a dodo, then suddenly springs into life!?

Alternator knackered (according to boatyard) on Port engine, which had us in problems this morning cause use of bow thruster (which must be wired to port engine starting battery) took available volts down to less than ECD would accept as reasonable and tried to shut down engine. leaving just starbrd!

Suddenly on startup Engine room blower making God awfull screaming noise, probably bearing knackered but did you ever experience this?

We have also renewed cutlass bearing and various other bits and pieces but the boat is fabulous and now sitting on her berth in Sunny, yes Sunny, Poole.

How the Surveyor can tell me the CD/radio doesnt work but miss the bloody cutlass, God only knows. Of course the CD RAdio did work cause it was on the buying guide but broker fixed radio, before I took delivery...............Solution?.. piece of velcro stuck on to stop anti theft front panel from fallin out due to broken catch!!!

Autohelm not talking to Chartplotter/Radar. Tried new head but same problem. Talk of problem with black box?

How can I make them talk, I want a friendly boat?

Cheers

Chris

We talking diesel Genny I assume? Sounds like the battery feed to it is intermittant as this would explain the bad starting, if it's autostop then it will need 12v to keep its fuel solenoid open. Suggest finding out where it gets its power from and having clean, could be knacked fuse or connection. When it stops does it stop dead or peter out? Engine blower yea agree sounds like knacked bearings at least they're not a fortune, but getting to it maybe a challenge. Alternator does it have a warning light, if so what's that doing?
Also check battery voltage with DVM, if EDC has packed up must be quite low. This isn't the same battery for the Genny is it?
Anyway take it off and down to local autoelectrics place, they'll test it and if broke sort it out.
That'll keep you out of the sun for a few days /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I already replied by PM. Agree with others I think the batteries have had it, and should be at 14v. The engine blowers are quite flimsy, mine wet pop , not sure they are very much needed in UK anyway, but nylon lubricant will shuttem up. Also, even if it worked, I don't think i woiuld ever link apilot and plotter for a hands off trip really...

Oh yes, must have pilot linked to plotter. then boat goes straight down the line. No deviation. Course that dont mean you go to bed and read a book for the whole trip. But does mean you can sit up the fly bridge with just autopilot, which will tell you if somethings gone wrong and off course. A look down stairs whilst putting the kettle on or collecting beer from fridge. Will confirm that water temp oil and position are all ok, or not, as the case may be.

i'll be really impressed when you can do that remotely. Programme gps route send to gps. boat starts up and goes to where you want it to pick you up.

No need for lookout just have a big sign saying 'I am Racing' and people will get out of your way. ;-)

hang on they do do that don't they its called a cruise missile

Sounds like you should have bought a Sealine, Chris. Sorry to hear about your probs
I was amazed to find that, on my T48, the Furuno plotter and Autohelm autopilot were also NOT interfaced either despite both appearing to be original Fairline fitment. Is this a Fairline policy or just coincedence?

Answers to todays quiz

The Genny problem was a hairline crack in fuel filter allowing air in but no sign of a leak!!!!

Alternator and new port side battery solved problem.

Silicone lubricant on blower has stopped bearing noise.

Now that we have 14 volts on port side battery Autohelm happily talking to Chartplotter/radar

New CD/Radio solved erm....... CD/Radio problem!!

Marks out of 5 ?

Well TCM had 4 in his PM although suggested it would be fuel so probably 5.

Rest of you mark yourselves.

The answer regarding Genny I think may have been a little more complicated than just air (see answers to quiz) as of course this would not have solved deadness when trying to start. I think the starter solenoid was playing up as well or maybe the switch. I think lack of use was the main problem ref starting as the switch was a bit intermittant but I read it as the Genny shutting down for overheating or lack oil or fuel and not allowing a restart until condition rectified; but it seems to be humming away fine now and starting fine.

Cheers.

Hi Mike,

In answers you will see they are talking now and as for problems, well, all part of life's rich pageant!!

I think yesterday I got to the point where I was finding problems quicker than I was solving them, but all fairly trivial and suprising what a difference that new port side battery made. What I failed to realise with that was why shore power was not charging battery back to a usefull state. It must have been so knackered that it could not even take a charge. When I tried the boat in Majorca I had to use the crossover to start Port Engine from Domestics but I figured it was lack of use thing.

Does your liferaft fit in portside deck locker? If not where do you keep it?

I have a Plastimo 4 man liferaft in a valise which I specifically bought for its small overall size to fit a space on my last boat. This happens to fit snugly on the T48 into the port side locker next to the cockpit table. You might find that a containerised liferaft may fit in one of the lockers above the dinghy garage? If you're buying a liferaft, its worthwile comparing dimensions because they vary quite a bit

Probelms with the Autohelm may be fixed by speaking with Dave Wellcome of Raymarine - software development engineer - who knows everything to do with all Autohelm products. V helpful. Helped many on this forum.

Have you taken delivery of the Flemming Piers? I'm still green with envy, a real beauty and so practical.
