The Swellies Bah !

A couple of weeks ago we travelled through the Swellies 1 1/2hrs after low water, Ok Ok I followed one of my mad mates through who like a certain Welshman has been playing in them for many years.

I worked on the principle that he has 80 hp and 8' draft and I had 120hp and 4' something so following seemed a good idea.

On the way through the kayaks were enjoying themselves in the rapids, which well to be honest worried me a little but hey ho he was in front so what the hell.

Any way I received these today and thought that some would like to see a low water passage, I have to say that I dont think I will be doing this very often

The currents will take you past the infamous 'swellie rock' and leave you stranded on a relatively sandy bit!

If you conk.
As long as you can 'paddle' or summat and evade the island called 'Gorad Goch' you will end up swirling under Brittania bridge and land up amonsgt some moorings at a place called Pwllfanog.

Tiss not a place to mess with however.
Especially with a displacement craft , like Little Ship or James's Yoghurt whatsit!

Planing and semis can bash through at nearly all states of the tide.

That's from my album and it kinda worried me when we were going passed it.... there were some divers that were actually going to free dive after we had passed., so if anybody calls me nuts for going through I have a defence! almost!

No, the water will generally wash you through unscathed. The Three Peaks boats do it every few years when there is no wind and so does the annual raft race.

I have drifted through once, although I did have my engine running, just in case.

Well it would certainly be interesting. Only heard of a couple of instances, neither of which ended in disaster, but they could have done!

COUGH ! it was high tide when I went throuh the other way and it was just daylight, no way will I try low in the dark ..... unless I'm in the Majors durex!
