The Stevenson family

Victorian engineering and engineers make for fascinating reading whilst there were disasters both financial and actual they provided the base of progress that we now enjoy and take for granted.

The dissection of RLS books is fascinating with real places associated with the lighthouses he visited, influencing and being incorporated into his novels, with some being very obvious e.g. Kidnapped. It is the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that is the most fascinating though. some locations in the book can be mapped to the vista from his bedroom window in Edinburgh, a room he spent a lot of time in when sick as a child, and the old town in Edinburgh (as well as The New Town) provided much of the London vistas woven into the story.

A remarkable family.

There is a book "The Lighthouse Stevensons" by Bella Bathurst about the building of the lighthouses. I found it fascinating and the descriptions of the hardships they went through incredible. Well worth a read
Own the book. Remarkable engineering. Working with the tides added hardship.
