Yes, that is Ewen breaking the shotgun, and the honour of firing went to Norm Bailey of the Newport Yacht Club.
I think they missed a great opportunity to have a Le Mans start, as a bit of fun. Of course if all the skippers raced back to their boats it may have interrupted the beer drinking.
Many years ago I sailed a trailer sailer on Moreton Bay in Australia. One particular race we used to line all the boats up on the beach and have the skippers race down the beach to prepare the boats. Lots of fun and lots of confusion.
