Some interseting seas breaking over The Shingles this afternoon (not just wash either, I was watching for about an hour). Looks like the recent gales and spring tides have pushed the banks up.
I was atop the spinnaker tower last Wednesday and saw seas breaking over the bar off Gilkicker point - it was at about half tide, I reckon. I can't remember it ever being so shallow there (used to keep the boat at Haslar until 3 years ago) - has the sand shifted off Gilkicker also?
I went around Gilkicker yesterday and it looked very brown/gravel coloured close in so being a natural scaredy cat (others might say prudent) I went well to the south as it didn't "feel right" taking the normal "close in" strategy.
Gilkicker is often quite lively, used to go wave jumping in a old 505 there! Its quite a sharp change of depth with plenty of current over it. Not exactly St Aldhelms, but has probably spilt a few G&T's in its time!
It's always interesting to note those 'racy types' who, going out through the Needles Channel a bit to the right hand side and on a big ebb, fail to appreciate that the tide-stream - balked a little by the constriction of the Bridge - suddenly sets part-sideways onto and across the Shingles Bank. Then some of 'em find themselves bumping their keels across the gravel, with no way to leave the first mark of the course, the Bridge Buoy, to starboard.
And, having forked out a hefty race entrance fee, quite a few of those do not retire as they should, but continue in the hope that no-one noticed....
....that the first 'trap' of the Fastnet Race usually catches about a dozen before they're properly at sea!
