Certainly agree with many of the sentiments expressed above.

Having said that we have now owned 6 yachts over the past few years, all bought secondhand and only 2 from brokers- as it happens both of those were part exchange boats taken in by the brokers who appeared , perhaps not surprisingly, to be rather more realistic than some about the value of the boat and eager to discuss sensible offers to sell.

Have sold 4 of our yachts over the years (still own one and one written off in great storm of 87) and used brokers to sell 2 of them and not unhappy with their handling of sale although remain of the view that their headline commision can be high but equally can be negotiable.

Echo the positive comments about Ancasta Plymouth, Brian Butler there handled sale of our Freedom 35 smoothly and professionally - recognised as an expert in freedoms and we were happy that made a positive difference even though boat was sold from solent area.

However, sadly I can think of very very few brokers I have ever had any dealings with who have been in any way impressive- general quality of details supplied atrocious- knowledge of the boat for sale marginal at best and presentation of boats they are handling not to their credit, we too once travelled several hundred miles (from sussex to Wales) to view a boat through a broker , by arrangement, and were let down badly by the broker on arriving.

Like so many others we have been to see too many boats described in glowing terms by either broker or owner and on arrival have opened the hatch and frankly not needed to go any further than peer through to know the boat has been unloved and was not right for us.

Dare I say that estate agents appear to have cleaned up their act a bit and the quality of details from estate agents appears to have improved significantly over recent years- not difficult now with digital cameras and internet to provide good photos of the boat inside and out - last time I looked didn't notice many brokers sites providing much at all, be interesting to hear a brokers perspective- no doubt many are critical of vendors and "potential purchasers" ?

We bought our current boat from holland where at the time prices were significantly lower, greater choice and most striking of all - owners seemed to be proud of their boats and keep them nicely.

The reason for my post is that i've been trying to sell my previous boat a Bavaria 40 Ocean since October and have been disapointed by the responces so far. She's been well loved and had loads of extras fitted but the feedback I've had from the broker is Loads of interest but no offers.

Very frustrating as i feel i've been much more realistic about the price than others out there and am just coming to the conclusion that people don't like the type of boat.

First time selling a boat however so maybe its not the right time of year in the market yet?

Re: Bav 40 ocean

They have no problem selling Bav's new so in theory there should be a 2nd hand market for yours. If you have had a lot of interest, but no firm offers, then maybe broker is not up to it, or telling you a porky about levels of interest.

Look at;
Where it is - on a good sales line or...?
Is the price difference enough to differentiate from new - used
Is she in tip top presentation order
Are copies of all the paperwork handy
Is there a previous survey for buyers to peruse
Is there a log for buyers to view
Have you prepared a history of the boat and where she has been and what used for
If on the hard is she freshly antifouled, topsides gleaming etc
Have you considered joint brokerage
(assume it is on the net?)

Re: Bav 40 ocean

Its on with a well known Bavaria broker and I'm not suggesting they are doing a bad job, far from it they have been very helpful and plesant I'm just supprised its not sold. Its only 2 years old, is 10k cheeper than the next nearest when i look on the web. Few good points you've made which has made me think I should go take some interior pictures etc and maybe type a short history out.

Thanks for the hints.

Re: good owners want a good home...

Isn't this the secret? Good owners want a nice home for their boats. It has been for me -twice I liked the owners a lot, nice caring people, honest and reluctant to sell - you know the picture? Both boats a great buy - near the asking price, of course, after all it's tat for tat in any sale situation! Resold after some seasons and achieved good value again.

Next I bought new - 6 years ago - since all the Westerlys I saw were grossly overpriced and clearly not looked after. If a DIY maniac has been at work anywhere in the boat I walk away; you never know what will come apart in your hands!

UK brokers are in almost all cases way behind events, and charging a fee that is in no way justified. They play no role in prepping the boat - perhaps a little spray to neutralise the smell of burning circuits etc. New boats at low prices are a very attractive alternative to dealing with the offerings made through brokers. After all, why take chances with dodgy second hand boats when you can buy new with a guarantee? I do not say that UK brokers are crooks, but they have no concept of added value, and it shows.

You can buy second hand with confidence through a broker - but you have to travel to Holland to do it.

So, buy private or buy new, I say! Or look abroad.

Hello Graham.
How about this one. Went to Benalmadna to look at/buy a Sealine arranged time & date by e-mail with broker, when I arrived he had gone on holiday & the assistant
did not even have the keys.
Result no sale and a brokers assistant who wished he had stayed home that day
