"The sailing yacht alongside has a crw of naval officers"

My Old Man was a Pilot on the Clyde: I now realise the truth in what he used to say.

"The Royal Navy are gentlemen trying to be sailors, the Merchant Navy are sailors trying to be gentlemen and the RFA are trying to be neither and succeeding."

You should substitute seamen for sailors - MN people were never 'sailors'!

Have heard a lot on the forum last few days about this RYAPRATT at Foxs who managed to do so much damage.....is there any pictures!

P20000's (or P20s when painted black and driven by the RNXS) are fun 'sport boats' which University types play at being sailors in....Engines from tanks and the ability to roll on grass. One of the 'Ex' boats had a yard broom stuck in the bilge from when being built. Anyone know if still there?

The way I heard it.

Royal Navy Officers were Gentlemen pretending to be seamen.

Royal Navy Reserve Officers were Seamen Pretending to be Gentlemen.

Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve Officers were Yachtsmen Pretending To Be Both Seamen and Gentlemen

Its no longer relevant the RNR and RNVR combined long ago. At one time there was a distinction between MN Officers who joined the Reserve and Yachts Men who Joined The Volunteer Reserve.
The MN officers are not able to show up for weekly training sessions.

As I remember it:

Royal Navy Officers are Gentlemen trying to be seamen.
Royal Naval Reserve Officers are Seamen trying to be gentlemen.
Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Officers are neither trying to be both.

RNR was of course purely MN or ex RN personnel. Officers of the MN often faced 'automatic' admission into the RNR depending as to which of the schoolships you did your pre-sea training aboard.
RNVR wasn't just yachtsmen, but any man off the street. Hostilities only Officers and Ratings during WW2 (i.e. those who joined up or were called up for the duration) were all administered as RNVR and wore the appropriate insignia as each type of Officer had their own braid.
There is still a distinction today within the RNR between MN people and the rest, reflected in the 'list' system. MN personnel are List 1.
