I've learnt an important lesson.
when you are looking for a problem with wiring assume nothing.
it turned out the control box was faulty so i have replaced it AND the wiring from the port starboard trim tab was 180 degrees out.
only resolved the problem by starting at the stern and working forward.
i'll try mending the old control panel during the long winter nights and selling it on
