The rowers are out on the river in this???

Driving back into town on the M3 yesterday just after Chertsey Bridge I saw a load of rowers on the lake next to the Thames. Never seen that before perhaps because of the stream ?

I no longer think the Rowers were being foolhardy as they are on the tidal reach and should be aware and experienced with ebb and flow. This was emphasised to me when I realised the two boats in the picture were manned by Sea Cadets.

Except of course the Sea Cadets have proper boats with sensible freeboard which is more than can be said for the rowers

I understand that Ian but they are based tidally and therefore experienced in coping with tidal flows. Furthermore this accident wasn't caused by sinking (freeboard) it was I believe a result of allowing themselves to be swept on to moorings.

I suspect its just less experienced rowers, that is an accident that could happen anytime on the tideway.
I can remember going out in similar conditions to now in the 70's, you could easily have rowed over the fields if you didn't know
where you were going. We used to use eights only with a safety launch, took 30mins down to byrons and an hour and a half back!!!

If you look closely you will see the rowing coach boat stuck under the pontoon in the background!

No rescue facilities were used or available to them when it came down to it.

The Coach Boat probably got into trouble trying to help. Here inexperience in such matters would count against him.
