IMHO well worth a read if you're interested in Tilman's life and cruises.

thanks for the book suggestion - indeed worth reading if you have read any/most/all of tilman's books.

wonder how a converted tug would sail? at one point he said could carry all sail on a beam reach in a 30knot wind. but what about upwind? has anyone else done this? cos a strengthened tug boat would otherwise seem ideal for ice.

According to Tim Madge, in the Tilman biography, Simon Richardson welded a keel on En Avant himself. She was rigged as a gaff cutter.

[Richardson] had attached the keel and modified the hull didn’t appear to be
terribly robust in his view. I just felt that she wasn’t really designed for sail; she
was clearly heavy and in the event of a large sea and broaching, she would
have been swamped. Nevertheless, the indications from the letters sent home
from Rio were that they had a good passage thus far, and she’d been reasonably
well fancied.”

Just finished reading it and would give it a "thumbs up".
Absolutely hated the introduction though and some other bits were a bit odd but gets much better later. Certainly worth it!

I did a search for this on amazon and didn't find it.

A google search on "The Quest For Simon Richardson." by Dorothy Richardson
turned up "About 31 results (0.22 seconds)"

one of which found, on Amazon

complete with a photo of the book, and that is the title.

substituting "for" for "of" makes a subtle but important difference in the meaning of the title, and it seems that most sources think it is "for" not "of". Searching for the published title only finds 2 results!
