Yesterday was a practice day for the review and i had previously contacted QHM to ask whether I might stand in for her maj at midday (little realising she'd got the sniffles and would have cancelled anyway) but never got a reply. He might have got the hump over my suggestion he step out of his cabin and curtsy as i passed which, to be fair, might have been a bit much.
nothing daunted, promptly at 12, i sailed out of portsmuff with a cardboard cutout of her maj (quality version, pic on both sides) giving a regal wave which after some ingenious work with scissors, string, stick and selotape, I got her hand to move up and down. Very realistic it was and some bods on the castle and the Gosport "Queen" even gave a wave back.
However, the wind picked up to 25+ kn and was tramping along in glorious sunshine and a near flat sea. so chucked her maj below ready for next tuesday in case she doesn't recover ...
the day ended in the Hythe marina boozer, somehow or other, slurping away with friend ...
