When anchored in a nice quiet spot it's always nice to drop a line over and pull up something tasty for the pot, but I find the problems start after a day or so when any fresh bait on board starts to get decidedly anti-social with regard to its BO.

Has anyone found a good solution? Are the shrink-wrapped dried baits you see in tackle shops any good; and are there artificial lures that actually work without fresh bait attached (apart from mackerel feathers).

I used to settle for just the mackerel fishing but there seems to be fewer and fewer about.

There are loads of spinners/lures you can work over rocks for bass and pollock.

The Gulp artificial baits have been well received my lots of anglers, I've tried them in the form of a small rectangular crab bait, they worked just as well as fresh bait as far as I could tell. Couldn't see the one I tried on this link, but if you google Gulp baits you'll find lots of options and they last for ages and ages with no pong! :D http://www.berkley-fishing.co.uk/catalogue/baits-lures,885/soft-baits,886/gulp-saltwater,888/catalog,1.html

If you haven't tried them shrimp feathers are great for picking up different species apart from mackeral, Hokkai's are the best http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/shrimp-rigs

I use plastic lures a lot these days. The Gulp lures are not plastic and will deteriorate if not kept moist after use. Now its winter here and the temperature is down to about 20c I have been doing a bit more bait fishing. Buy a kilo of farmed king prawns and divide the prawns into packs of 5 or six and freeze them down. When you go fishing thaw out a pack. I divide each prawn into 3 and use the head first. Catch your feed and then eat the remainder of your bait. Unfortunately my dog likes prawns too so I have to watch him!
