And now for something completely different. Fond memories of a trip to east africa a few years ago when 16 of us travelled with "Fields of Life" to complete work on a new school funded by many hundreds of generous Irish & British people and school children. http://www.fieldsoflife.com

After two weeks working on the school we had a day off and were blessed with a visit to the extraordinary unspoilt wildlife preserve at Kaparega National Park - on the Nile

After driving for hours along dusty dirt tracks we came to a water crossing. Hmmm - I thought that's a large river - It's the Nile I quickly realised.

Not quite the HSS, but this was our ferry crossing. We were totally wowed by it all and how amazingly the Ugandans had protected their wildlife reserves

The Nile - One big inland waterway.

As we were on the equator, we set off at 0600am before the heat of the day.

There was an abundance of wildlife in the park.

5 mins earlier OF had a visit to a virtual open air rest room, 10 seconds after getting back in the vehicle 5 of these lads crossed the road feet from where I had been standing!

They obviously didn't fancy Frogs Legs that day! Phew

This is one of the images of Africa etched in my memory for all time. Four lines of different species wandering the same savanna hillside in harmony. It reminded me of opening scenes from the movie Jurassic park, only this wasn't CGI, it was real - what an amazing wonder our planet is.

Giraffe were everywhere

Hippos in the Nile. I suspect our trip boat was less modern than some of the vessels still sunk in Tullamore!

We we bowled over by the abundance of wildlife. The day before on route we called into a Chimp sanctuary, which strictly limited visits to 20 people a day so as not to spoil the sanctuary or upset the Chimps.

The mile wide Nile compresses to only 7 meters wide at Murchison Falls and drops 43 meters.

Nile 1 mile wide comressed into 7 meters. You could feel natures raw energy virate the rock you were standing on.

As I type this there are now 40,000 African children receiving an education thanks to the loving generosity of Irish & British people who both funded the building of over 100 schools in east Africa, and sponsor the education of poorer children and orphans. Education is better than money, it helps others to help themselves. Education creates economy, food production, and starts to put a proper dint in poverty. Laterly Fields of Life have been drilling wells as poor drinking water is the biggest cause of youth mortality.

You wouldn't beleive the fun the children had with balloons - not a game boy in sight

We tried to teach the boys rugby but they kept telling us we had brought a broken ball - wrong shape :)

This snap was taken at the opening of the school we had been working on. Folks back here had donated money for school books, uniforms and simple equipment.

When I left Africa I wondered who was really poor - them or we in the west? We certainly are physically and materially better off, no worries about food and shelter for most here, but somehow I suspected they were richer in heart and mind. They seemed to have "something" we may have lost. Can't put my finger on it, but it moved me.

In a screwed up world, it was nice to realise there is still a lot of good and love in peoples hearts - both here and there. Happy Christmas. :)

Inspirational stuff as ever OF thank you.

I went to Masi Mara 20 years ago, it made a huge impression on me which is with me today.

God bless you.
