Can anyone recommend a boatbuilding book in print I can order with substantial information on traditional counter construction? Edith's original smack counter has in the past been rounded off and otherwise 'yachtified', and we're not happy about just repairing it as it was. No ventilation in the point, and doubtful strength.

Cheers
Richard

Dunno about "substantial" , but Watts and Jurd are fairly good on it. Their methods are probably expensive, as they envisage the use of a sizeable teak stern chock to land everything on. Have seen rather sad counters where oak was used for this purpose and either warped or rotted. Iroko ought to be OK and you could glue up the block to be sure it would stay stable.
