Could this be the next big thing for the multi-millionaire that doesn't mind sinking. The boating equivalent of that Lotus Esprit in The Spy Who Loved Me?

Could save on marina fees, just leave it on the bottom?

Dodgy Weather Forecast? Just drop to -200ft and avoid the chop!

Just reading Clive Cusslers book Valhalla Rising, (usual Cussler hero stuff - saves the day with knife between teeth while he fights half a navy!)BUT he manages to stop a gas tanker from crashing into Manhattan by disabling its rudder when he rams a private luxury sub (which was built for customer in Monacco) into it. It looks like it is the next big thing already.
Its a bit like how science fiction used to be - it was written 50 years before being existence but nowadays its only a couple of years or months.

Can you just buy a submarine and use where ever you like? what would happen if you bought one for use in the solent, be interesting to try running from the Hamble to the folly submerged, assuming it was deep enough.
Also how would you give way to all those yotties /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif do you have to?

From your descriptions so far it seems likely they already have, though whether you'd get it to float again afterwards is a different matter.

I vaguely remember seeing a mini sub at the first London Boat Show that I attended, probably early 60s. I haven't seen many about since then so I assume that it didn't catch on.

How this would work in the Solent? The visibility, the shallow water hazards, what's the procedure for surfacing? Do the colregs cover what you should do if one of these things appears from the deep?

You'd probably trigger the Navy's anti-sub detection devices and find yourself getting depth charged...

I will have to brush up on my colregs vertical movement rules, As I undertsand it - those vessels on top of the water are the 'stand on' vessels and those underneath are the 'stand under' vessels. From memory 'stand under' vessels have no right of way against anything except sailing boat where they have an absolute right of way in all circumstances.

It would indeed be a great show of seamanship to get up all the way to Emsworth in a submarine - some really dodgy stuff there including the that sill at Emsworth.

Having spent half my adult life serving on a submarines I can assure you that it is not much fun. You spend months going a long way seeing nothing much except the the boring, ugly, smelly, fart*** fellow submariner in the next bunk - 18 inches away from yours.

how many crew did you have though. These are designed as luxury vessels, not military. They talk of crew of three, or even being single handed on smaller versions.

See you've already gotta a name for your sub! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
