I was reading about the new MTU engine on page 112 of this month's MBY describing the latest 'common rail' technology.

Im sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but the Cummins (VT903) engines in our boat use the common rail system and they are 25 years old.

I don't know the engines you have but do wonder about the common rail aspect ..??..

Do you also have electronic engine management to fire the injectors ?

Electronically controlled "common rail" injection systems are a modern spin off from Cummins's mechanical common rail type system which they have used for yonks. My landrover uses electronic type computer controlled common rail, great easy to tune , just add chip and bigger intercooler and hey presto 190 bhp from 2.5 ltr. But on a boat engine , IMHO Cummins and any mechanically injectioned system has the reliability advantage of relative symplicity ie no electronics to go phut at the sight of saltwater !!
