...is a frightened man with a bucket.

The best cure for seasickness is to sit under a tree.

Hoisting the mainsail isn't a job for girls/croquet players/any other crew I want to goad into doing it for me.

The drogue of a life buoy should be placed on the head if you are a MOB. Try it now so we can be sure to throw you the right size.

What other pearls of wisdom do you like to dispense to beginners?

Don't let go of the halya....

Yes, that's right, the bit that you have just let go of and has now shot up to the top of the mast. (this miight not be a problem for folk in modern boats (which is perhaps why my crewmembers dont always get it)). It is a problem if you have a wooden block on the downhaul part of the halyard.

That's one too many things Snowleopard!

Newbies can only remember the first 3 things you tell them.

My order of preference.....

1) this is how the heads work - if you block it you're fixing it.
2) this is how to start the engine
3) this is how you make me tea and coffee

The US Coastguard has a code in its accident reports - FFO: Flies Found Open because of the frequency of drownings from people taking a pee over the rail and falling in.
