He passed me just as I was leaving my berth at Gillingham. The fog was clear in Gillingham Reach but thick from the lock gates upstream. He was followed close behind by a smaller ship, I think it was called the Fox. They both reported the fog clear in the upper reaches. The large one had to loiter for half an hour as the tide was ½ a meter below prediction.
For those interested the fishing was good. We had Herring, Mackerel, Bass, Whiting and Codling and plenty of them.
Well if you buy the little feathers (number 6 hook) and hang around the entrance to Stangate about 3 hours before the end of the ebb. You will see birds working the water at some point. Not in the dark of course. Get in among them quietly and work your feathers on the bottom. You'll get lots of little bass but herring and mackerel as well. A small bit of squid on each hook will be enough to stop the small bass from taking the hook right down so you can return them. I like to anchor just north of the old explosives mooring in Stangate and wait for them to come along. I use a bit of ground bait to keep them around once they arrive. Anchoring near the barge just outside Stangate is a good waiting spot as well. The whiting and codling are just about anywhere outside along the edge of the channel where there is a good flow of tide. I like the small depression a couple of cables south of the number 6 for the first 3 hours of the flood. Bait is lug and squid, if your just after whiting fish bait takes the better ones.
We are on holiday this week so will be out most days. I was planning a trip to the gunfleet, staying over in the Blackwater but with easterlies forecast I will probably stay local. I will post a catch report.
Oh if you get loads of rapid knocks and can't hook them it's dabs, scale down hook size if you want them. If you stumble on a patch that has dabs you seem to get loads of them.
Done a lot of fishing the last few days. Plenty of fish in the river as well as outside. Tried a few new marks and everywhere produced. I will say the bigger codling are outside anywhere where there is a reasonable bit of tide. We had fun one evening up tight, very tight, to the western edge of Burntwick. We had codling, dogs, dabs, bass, whiting, eel and pout.
Anyone know of any firework displays on the Medway next weekend?
Heehee - I'm afraid I'm a little bit like the Major; a one man fish exclusion zone /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Still I dream of those big November Cod, but a few Whiting would be welcome in reality. Or an eel. I can cook wonders with an eel.
Good to meet Unit18 today - you Mudway lot are far friendlier and less fearsome than I thought (but I expect they say that about me as well ...)
Hi Raedwald, welcome to the Democratic Peoples Republic of North Medwaystan.
Me out fishing about to put "Stoatys Inffallable guide to Fishing" into practice on Sat.
Modesty dictates that the number of fish I caught should remain a closely guarded state secret, suffice to say that we would all starve if my skills were relied on.
Hope to meet you soon.
PS If you ever agree to go anywhere with UNIT18 it is good ie to confirm the day and month and preferably the year as well.
No No No. It's impossible to fish and keep a boat that clean. Where are the rolls of lining paper to soak up the lug juice or the high pressure deck wash to blow away the stuck on squid?. The cushions should be locked away from slimy fish bait fingers. Did you take the moon landing pictures by any chance?

How very dare you, especially when I happened across you after you followed a yacht (only just keeping up with it) and ended up sort of near the Crouch and I bravely led the way in against almost insurmountable odds, then tell you how to get home by going a proper route, and what do you do.....first sight of a big chimney you head straight for that!
Nice to meet you Mike, if you are unsure of Medway protocol have a look at the Midsummer Medway meet thread on Ad Hoc. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
