Has anyone ventured up to Newport in there boat on a rising spring tide ? Would it be possible for a fin with 1.9m draught.

Is there anything there? I quess once there a sharp exit would be required before someone pulls the plug out of the bath.

I've always wondered what Newport was like.

My books are all elsewhere, but I think you could get up to Newport, certainly at HW Springs and perhaps at other times. Once there, you'll find all manner of stuff, including a wall to dry out against and other facilities, so no need to turn round and beat a hasty retreat. There's a couple of nearby pubs (see here for some recommendations) and all manner of other stuff.

Alternatively, stop at Island Harbour (also tidal but a wider window) and go up on the tide in your dinghy, or walk along the river for a recce. Worth a visit.

yeah, i went with a 50 foot powerboat, drawing 1.9m, you can mooring up and go ashore for a short while. Bit of a dump really, sort of like a small bit of manchester with knackered terraced houses and rubbishy shops. Not been back.

Yep - good little trip up the Medina. As previously stated, you can dry out alongside the wall on a good firm, level bottom but you'd only have a 3/4 hour window if you're lucky. I too would suggest Island Harbour Marina and go the rest in the rubadub. Newport is not quite Bath sur l'Isle but Carisbroke Castle is certainkly worth a butchers and Island Harbour isn't far from Osborne House which is a must now they've spent all that dosh on Mr. Brwn's favourite residence.
Enjoy!

Bargeman's Rest pub on opposite side to the pontoon - pleasant large pub serves substantial meals with music most evenings. Interesting collection of original boat paraphenalia and authentic atmosphere (even though it was a squash club not many years ago).

Railway Medina pub just round the corner - traditional small local with good beer.

Quay Arts Centre - pleasant for coffee and bistro style lunches. Also arty type shop and various exhibitions.

Medina Quay pub just down river - same chain as The Lifeboat at East Cowes. If you've been to one before you probably won't go back.

Toilets and showers on the quay.

Bus Museum and Boat Museum on the quay as well

Five minute walk up into town with all the usual pubs, restaurants and shops. Nothing exceptional but not unpleasant. Market day Tuesday but no where near as good as Lymington or Gosport.

The council has been slowly obtaining all the land either side of the quay. Watch for development over the next few years when they finish arguing about what they should do.

suggest you check what they will charge you before going to Island Harbour- we were charged more for an overnight stay in our 34' than anywhere else we have berthed overnight before or since (and that includes various MDL) facilities far from special too, easy stroll to newport or folly though.

Also be wary of flow when lock gates on free flow - we saw one bump and one very near miss when entrants underestimated flow within the harbour,

have stayed before at Newport and found it interesting change of venue and fun to go to for a change, let us know how you get on as we draw 5'7" and haven't gone there with current boat yet!

I like Newport ..... but then again I have a bilge keeler !

Single keel jobs MUST lie against the harbour wall on left past the pontoons ......... not allowed to use pontoons or other etc.

1.9m draft ...... mmmmmm - my advise DO NOT creep along the centre of river when passing the pontoons ..... that is the shallowest part ..... you have to keep right up hard on the boats on pontoon or hard over the other side till going round the last bend - then straight alongside.......

Me Too.

I wouldn't want to live there but its worth a visit once or twice a year. The toilets are basic but clean & the charges are very reasonable.

It's popular with my family.

I did it years ago in a fin keeler, no problem, dried out. Left at around 01.00 but..encountered "river fog" which made it a bit tricky.(it was late October i seem to recall.) Ended up in East Cowes Marina, around 03.30,will never know how we did it!

The HM and his assistant are two of the most helpful guys you could ask for. They always are friendly etc.
The facilities are always clean and tidy .... never had cause for complain.
Charges are council rates and not MDL etc. so are very good.
Town is friendly and pubs no worse than many others .....

So whats the problem ?? I love the trip up the river and night in .... ghosting up the river enjoying the view etc.

But again I'm lucky - I have a bilge keeler that only draws 1m about.

Island Harbour charges

How much did you get charged then? We have been to Island harbour a few times this year and paid about £22 inc electric for a 35' boat. Stay two nights and get a voucher for a free night when you return. One of the cheapest in the Solent for an overnight marina berth.

i am planning to visit soon with a friend, we will be on a 24 foot boat (a 'fishing boat' I assume, I am not experienced sailor, my friend is the pilot).

But I was wondering where to find any information about tidal access to newport harbour, I have found a website but it has no such tidal window information. I gather that 24 feet is fairly small and should be reletively easy to navigate the harbour.

if anyone knows the information I require, or of any websites etc. it would be much appreciated.

regards

Don't worry unduely,
pick a day with HW around Midday which means it is a big tide and you should be able to drift up midmorning as your draft allows. There is a tidal stand at Newport just after HW. Have a good pub lunch and drift down again mid afternoon , I allow for 3/4 hours with my keel up at 1.2m draft but the tide does go away fairly rapidly after that.
Depending on your hull shape you can stay over low water as well, the bottom is soft mud. However don't do what I did when I was inspecting the hull with a foot of water left over this mud, walk around and disappear in a hole formed from someones keel who had been there earlier.
