The Med, a weather paradise...

Ya, you dont really want to be aboard when lightning strikes.

Wow, amazing pic indeed, even if it very much smells of photoshop, imho.

Btw, just for the records, I collected more details about the above accident, in the meantime.
First of all, the first indications about the mast being destroyed were not correct, and luckily the boat (smallish btw, 9m or so) only suffered minor/repairable damages. But what is more surprising is that the owners were onboard at that moment, and suffered no injuries at all!

you're probably right on the Photoshop score, I dont know it's provenance. As for the crew of your example not suffering any injuries I can only laud their constitution. Had I been there I would at the very least ruptured a bowel in fright if not gone into full cardiac arrest. I wonder if boats somehow do form some sort of Faraday's cage?

Amazing. It looked like a cruise missile hit them.

From the look of the impact I would of suspected a lot worse

If MapisM will have us again!!
U must be joking, it would always be our pleasure!
And if BartW will still be around, and AM will join us from down under, it's beginning to look like a forum meeting!
Besides, am I right in remembering that you mentioned someone else based in SCM who would have liked to visit my neck of the woods?
Just form an orderly queue...!

That's frightening! What are the odds of catching something like that on camera.

Glad that no major damage was done and nobody was hurt.

There seemed to be taller boats around too.

One would suspect that all the electronics were fried, do you know if this is the case?

that is very intriguing Mapsim, I've alway's been wondering about a lightning strike on a boat in open water,
especially this season, we saw there was a thunderstrom prediction when we were sailing south along the lower west coast of sardegna, (Porto Carollo region)
and suddenly we were almost middle in it,
I started to navigate at full planing speed, to the east, away from the coast where the thunderstorm and lightning strikes were most active, but then I became the only high object in the open sea...
Is there any knowledge about lightning strikes on boats onhere ?

Out of all the places we have been in the Western Med, Carloforte rates amongst the best of the best.
Certainly a place to revisit sometime.
If MapisM will have us again!!

for us its equal to Cassis (sof), and Cavtat (Croatia)
a old port right in the middle of a nice village / town, so ...

Cheers P, keen to catch up again.
Would be nice to co-ordinate a time frame when Bart is there as well.

my arrival in CF has made clear to us that we have to change our holiday habits,
Every year we have family and friends who want to join us, and book a week onboard for each of them, resulting in a busy planning, leaving very little time for us doing.............................. nothing.
on top of that we alway's plan a busy travel itinery
for next year, already now we've booked 4 groups / weeks :(
bookings are closed now, so that we have some remaining time available for us and local friends :D

Welcome to the island of the island of the peninsula!
That was exactly our first thought, when we landed here back in 2006, while still busy with the rat race.

But in the meantime, we learned that what we really had to change were our daily living habits, rather than just our holidays.
In fact, who needs holidays at all, if you think about it?
They only make sense for folks who spend most of their life doing something they don't really like/want to do...

Sorry K, I don't.
I was only told that the damages were not too bad, and common sense suggest that they had to include electronic equipment, at least to some extent.
But I don't have any further details...

You're not getting away that easily Bart, CF isn't that big, I'll find you somewhere :D

I'm sure we will manage to work out a day or two between crew change overs for us to catch up together, P & S's CF summer schedule is usually quite relaxed, so co-ordinating shouldn't be that difficult.

Perhaps doing the big crossing next season H?

I'm sure MM would enjoy having the fine ship JW and her crew over again.
I suppose somebody should let him know he may be in for a big summer ahead :D

I would be very pleased to help on that, hopefully we’ll have more time then just a day or two ;-)
