I know there is a forum for this stuff but I reckon it's worth a mention here.

The Haslar Lightship is under new management and pretty good they are too.

A warm welcome, friendly staff, a breakfast of 5 star quality and served quickly. Oh and "we won't charge full price for the childrens meals"

Good luck to them..

It used to be a bit hit & miss depending on who was on duty. I've had some eggsellent service there as well as some pretty poor reformatted chips!

Agreed - at the back end of last year we went to the lightship (Minnie Mouse?) a couple of times, food good, service etc excellent. As for the rest of the Marina facilities, I have to agree - the shower/toilet facilities are superb, clean etc with a staff proud enough to want to show you around. Furthermore for our 11.4 metre boat their annual fees are over £1000 per year cheaper than MDL at Hythe. The only let down can be wash from commercial traffic which is important to us as we spend quite a bit of time aboard throughout the year. Still cannot drag myself away from Hythe though - love it there! (until I'm really skint of course - next year?)

I agree a great place to stay but I only stay one or two nights during the year because at nearly £20 per night for a 8.25 metre (Albin Vega 27) I would rather visit Fareham further up Portsmouth Harbour and row ashore. If only the prices were more realsitic in this country. In the Baltic £5 is considered expensive and they knock our facilties into a cocked hat....

There is only wash on some of the outer berths. Large parts of the marina experience almost no motion whatsoever. Of course the visitor pontoons are in the worst spot (as it should be)!

When did that happen?
Got to say we thought they had gone seriously down hill over the last year - poorly cooked food, iffy menu. If its picked up I shall be delighted. Of course for viewing the action in the harbour entrance it cant be beaten.

Forgot to mention that some of the staff were a bit dubious. One girl, when asked to fill a glass two thirds full of mixer looked blank and asked if we'd tell her when to stop 'cos they didn't do fractions at school.

You joke but in my day skipper class yesterday well over half the class couldn't work out what (5/6)*60 (Estimated time of arrival) was without a calculator because they'd never been taught how to multiply fractions. I left school 6 years ago and can safely say that from senior school up the way we were taught meant that we became completely dependent on calculators and decimals. My mental arithmetic sucks despite the fact that I did A-level math and advanced stats and econometrics as part of my degree. I can completely imagine that there are thousands of kids out there who have only as vague idea of what a fraction actually is.

I was there on New Year's eve and can endorse Ian's comments. New management and very friendly eager to please staff. Very nice decor, good beer and excellent food. Mind you, SWMBO and I were the only customers!

Benefit of going New Year's eve? Calling Haslar for a visitor's berth and being told "anywhere you like sir!"

i normally quietly read threads....but it must be admitted that i am firmly of the belief that the light ship has the best showers anywhere on the south coast and thats as good a reson to go to any marina as i can think of....
