The Jet Stream and Us

Fascinating program, I recorded it the other night and watched it last night, I learnt a lot about why depressions move and keep landing over us.

I would suggest all sailors record this as an excellent reference document.

I was going to post to see if we should get together with other forums (walking, climbing, hand gliding, flying, farmers etc) and petition BBC4 to give us a 20-30 minute daily, proper weather forecast program. One that teaches and gives us detail.

Would possibly put Simon out of a job though, unless he approached the beeb with an extension to his weatherTV idea. Surely there are enough interest groups to make this a viable television program, it would be cheap to make too.

The inane it will be sunny weather is a waste of space for people who actually need a decent forecast!

Aaaah, but then you'll get into the argument about whether the jetstream drives the surface weather or the surface weather drives the jetstream, choke points, acceleration areas, bumps in the troposphere, etc...

I have always been interested in the weather and something which has always fascinated me is the fact that 'cold' winters are 'fairly repetitive'

1932, 1937, 1942, 1947, 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 1992, 2007. Some were much worse than others and some are famous for severe winter weather (1947, 1952, 1962 etc).

Now some of these dates us elderly brethren will remember quite well as being particularly bad for either snow or rain.

Only a rough guide of dates I have noticed? Just food for thought.

I wonder if the Jet Stream slowly snakes back and forward over UK like a meandering ox-bow river?

Now, where is that parapet I can hide behind? There is bound to be someone telling me I am talking rowlocks. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How are you defining that, and what stats to use. Cold winter in UK, which part?
You only have to look at a chart any day for the next week to see that temperature charts across the UK vary a great deal, so the numbers you are quoting for anyone day mean very little across the UK>

For years I have been asking the Beeb to give us the meteorological equivalent of "The sky at night"; a monthly half-hour for some knowledgeable people to talk about that month's weather, and maybe to go into greater depth on some of its features. But apparently they've decided that people in Britain have no interest in the weather; the fact that it's one of the biggest topics of conversation doesn't seem to have reached them.

I think the phrase you are looking for is "Dumbing Down".

I would like to see a synoptic chart but the Beeb (and other broadcasters) want to say "Put your coat on".
Keep it simple for the peasants.

(Actually I think the truth is that the decision makers at the Beeb etc. only managed a Media Studies A Level and assume we are as stupid as they are. Besides, it never rains in the London Underground).

Nearly right, only a small part of wales, an area measuring 26' x 13'9", I became the rain god in 2007. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
