Does anyone know about this wrapping of hulls as an anti fouling? The company is mactac.fr

Can someone try this and report back (preferably before my next antifouling is due)
 
Mactac are suppliers of self adhesive vinyl widely used in sign making, vehicle graphics and boat wrapping. I am not aware that they have extended their product for use as antifoul - perhaps they now have
 
looks like it's a self adhesive base layer (from mactac) with foul release top layer (from PPG) aimed at the commercial market.

This reminds me, after doing some vinyl wrapping on my car last year i wondered if it would stick under water and provide any foul release properties so I wrapped a bit of plastic and hung it in the marina at the start of the year.....must go and see how it looks!!

I think the article which of course is not only French but also sideways, says they are setting up a network of dealers and will be able to provide quotes. It doesn't say commercial so I suspect they are after the leisure market.
If your test strip is good will you be the forums guinea pig?
 
I saw a video a short while ago showing wrap as a form of Anti foul. (and not necessarily the above manufacturer) Didn't stop fouling as such but the old fella was able to peel back the vinyl by hand with minimal effort exposing the original gel coat in pristine condition. I thought it would be a rather expensive way to go about it.
 
i've already been a guinea pig by using Aquamarine Hullcoat foul release which i wrote about in another thread! Similar principal of foul release but painted on to the hull with a roller.

I do remember your thread, it was well documented and also the results were stunning, like a new hull.
Remember it's people like you who make it easier for the rest of us:encouragement:
 
something similar was reviewed in either PBO or YBW within the last couple of years - perhaps the mods can remember exactly when.

I've also read that with interest. Nice results but not for me as the manufacturers recommend constant light maintenance which would be awkward on a larger boat, but a great report from you nonetheless.

Yep the maintenance is a downside however I've only cleaned the bottom once this year and not noticed much impact on performance (a few knts down at most). I have regularly kept the waterline clean though (wipe over once every couple of weeks). Another downside is the risk of damage when grounding the boat which most small boat users like me might want to do. This may also be an issue with something like the wrap posted by the OP. Anyway I'll update my original thread when i have the boat back on the trailer next year (Jan probably).

In general I've no experience of larger boats with traditional antifoul so it's difficult for me to compare. For instance I've no idea how quickly an antifouled boat starts to foul up and affect performance during a season....if at all.

Coppercoat seems to be about the closest you can get to the holy grail given the 10 year lifetime claim but does anyone have 10 years worth of experience with it?
 
Mactac were at the Paris Boat Show, and I have their brochure it claims a 5 year efficacy for the antifoul wrap. And the speed that the two guys wrapped a boat while I was watching makes me think this is a five minute job to antifoul. It says you just wipe it down and its been tested in the Med. more later
