the GPS can\'t see through the windscreen

I've used my GPS 72 in many cars over the last couple of years but now I'm driving a Peugeot 307 and the GPS can't find the sats when it's on the dashboard. Move it near the side windows and hey presto it works.

Why ???

Think it's a metallic anti uv coating. Had the same in a hired 307sw.

Re: the GPS can\'t see through the windscreen

Haven't got a clue! The only thing I can think of is that there's something in the windscreen glass (such as tiny filament wires for an instant demister?) that is blanketing the signal. Seems implausible on the face of it.

The other explanation revolves around the fact that the Peugeot is French - unless it was made at Ryton - and wants to make your life a misery because it hasn't forgotten Agincourt, Waterloo etc. Possibly also it takes particular exception to the fact that your gps is from the Goddam US of A, home of the gibe about cheese eating surrender monkeys. Seems more plausible than explanation (a). /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Get sat nav. It's better in cars. I can't use my GPS in the car as I'll end up ignoring roads & driving through fields. Besides, nobody has ever given me their co-ordinates. I normally just get an address!!!!!

Re: the GPS can\'t see through the windscreen

I had the same problem using an Ipaq with GPS sleeve in a Passat.
Cant remember the detailed technical reason but some models have screens made from glass intended to minimise the heat transfer to inside the car and that also blocks out the GPS reception. I had to fit an external antenna with booster and reception is fine. This was all a few years back and then it was most Mercs and Audi and few odd models from other manufacturers. I guess now the use of that glass is more widespread.

iPAQ and Navman sleeve work superbly in my Mercedes!!!
Mind you it's nearly 4 years old, not a new one.....

It's definitely the anti-sun metallic bits in the glass. Some BMs do it, some Renaults, various. One of our cars does it.

You have to use the side windows or else fit a GPS re-emitter inside the car (cost about £60)

Could be the metallic coating - also I realised it has auto wipers so could it be the rain detection kit in the windscreen.

Real question is that my new car comes in about 5 weeks time and its the new Renault Grand Scenic - so will it work in that?? I feel a visit to my local Renault dealer coming on to do a GPS test /forums/images/icons/blush.gif

Re: the GPS can\'t see through the windscreen

Dunno about all brands but we have 2 cars different makes with auto wipers and the sensors are only about 2 inch square, so it's not that. Renault seem to have a very metallic windscreen option - eg those meganes/scenics with a screen that seems to have a strong silver/copper colour. So I'd guess there's a good chance they will block the signal. But the re-emitter fixes it easily and allows your GPS to sit on the dash

Bit of a late post of this subject but.

We in our sad efforts to earn a crust, get involved with various data systems in taxis which use GPS data to locate your cabs whereabouts(dont larf)so it arrives on time.Several vehicles suffer from the front windscreen preventing a dash mounted GPS aerial receiving any signal.Worse affected appears to be any Ford with the heated front screen.Moving aerial to corner sometimes cures problem.Signal from even high up satellite is very weak and also at extremely high frequency.Just about anything can stop it.
