The good old days......?

Does anyone else think that this board needs livening up a bit. I remember a year or more ago it was mayhem with funny postings and not a little confrontation. Some people were furious about the most silly things. It was great. Can't we have a little more fun mingled with questions about flags?

Re: Drawing the line

Some of the posts stepped over the line and became personally abusive. I did not draw their fire, but it did seem a little tastless at times. But yes i do miss the wit.

They\'ve all gone to another site...

...that you dare not name on here for fear of having your message removed by the board of censors!

Yes, the sharp wit of Nige, the Euro Knowledge of Marian, the gentle words of wisdom from Violetta, the cutting comments from KvT have all gone to this other site!

The pointed discussions and the ensuing mayhem are sadly missed, but for some strange reason one topic of apparently vital discussion remains on this forum..."What Ensign should I fly?"

Oh Well!!! NURSE!!!

Re: yes, but the question remains

If you want "practical" info or to be a "purist" then this is the site for your - however if you want the Banter and the wit, and general discussions that you would find in yacht club bar, then Boats Yachts Marinas is the place. I'm not knocking this site in any way, just pointing out that they are completely different, and cater to different needs.

Big brother replies

Grrrrrrrr.....do I sound suitably like the all-seeing big brother censor described?

Okay, so let me get this right. You are all missing what? Half-a-dozen people who left when the forum got attacked? No opinions left amongst the rest of you? Aw come on! You can do better than that.

These forums have Ts and Cs to which we like users to adhere and very occasionally we intervene if absolutely necessary. But only in cases of obvious breaches or where other users have complained in a valid way. And yes, not so very keen on other sites getting a free lunch from our hard work...call it a human weakness.

No-one is stopping opinions here...so where's the fresh blood to stir the circulation or are the missing half-dozen the only opinion makers in the sailing world? Surely you don't like seeing Scuttlebutt being firmly overtaken by Motor Boat Chat (what's the smiley for tongue-in-cheek?).

Oh, dear me

Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much!

On the old SB the "t & c" were being openly flouted. For example - with vindictive attacks, threats and actual vendettas against individuals. Requests to invoke the "t & c" were ignored. Really - is it any wonder people decided to stop posting. Come on, Kim - surely you can do better than snide attacks on the people who helped make the old SB what it was and who, in that situation, decided there were better places to meet on the internet?

my point exactly?

Not having a chew, just a slightly OTT attempt to point out that the absence of a few doesn't mean that you cannot have on this forum exactly what you want to make of it...we are certainly not interfering with that and Scuttlebutt remains unmoderated.

Yes, we will aim to stop senseless attacks on forum users and there seems to have been plenty of people on here that support that stance. From your comments it looks as though you think that people left Scuttlebutt because Ts and Cs were not invoked. If so, worry no more, it won't happen again. Genuinely sad to see anyone go but happy to see a steady growth in Yachting Monthly readers and other users since we relaunched these areas on a better platform with tools that make it possible to step effectively in the fortunately rare moments that one person threatens the enjoyment of many.

Fair?

Well - at least you have censored your own post!

Wording changed to cut out the comments about the people who ceased to post here! Don't know whether to be reassured or not!

There's a big difference. YBW is advertised in every IPC nautical magazine, so anyone can drop in, post a question, answer or comment. The discussion is like "Just A Minute" - deviation, hesitation and repetition discouraged. Current best question "Is the Flying Dutchman" a suitable starter dinghy for a 60-yera old"?

The BYM forum is far less widely advertised. It calls itself a "virtual yacht club". That's part of the feel. In a real yacht club you learn about the characters - Baggywrinkle Bob (Robert Clark Mystery Class) who loathes Kevlar Joe (Lexcen ex- Admiral's Cup One Tonner) but has an avuncular fondness for Lycra Zoe (Sunseeker 35) which is reciprocated, even though Bob thinks Fat Boy Slim is a branch of Weightwatchers. The same applies to BYM.

Starting with BYM is like being dropped into the middle of a long running soap opera without any introductions. You just have to pick up who has sailed where, when and with whom (but it is well worth the effort). Discussions are wide ranging with plenty of running gags, literary allusions, linguistic diversions ... You rapidly realise that a lot of the regulars have continued discussions off-line (giving your e-mail address is compulsory), have met up, sailed together, met the better half etc.

I'm a regular contributor to both forums (fora? - we will discover when NigeCh finds his Latin grammar book). Nothing on this site could compare to the current surreal silliness of the "how to cope with boring in-laws" thread on BYM. But I have had more hard invitations to sail and more hard information via this site.

Long may they both continue. There's plenty of space on the web for both.

Well, took about six words out actually but you made me look at it again and I did the honourable thing a la politician...you haven't got my resignation but I have retrospectively altered the chain of events.

Here is a question to stir things up a bit.

I know i go on about the Hamble and this is really for people who moor there but...

How many river moorings are owned by the council....how many are sublet...??

The 10-15 year waiting list could be made a lot shorter....!

I really feel strongly about cutting the costs of owning a boat and i cannot do it alone...is there any feeling out there that we could do something..anything..??

Lets see what replys i get..hopefully from some of the subletting berth holders

Well, you\'ll never get into Starfleet Academy!

Not if you go round altering timelines, you won't! :)
