Where are they?

"Suhaili" and "Joshua" are afloat. I saw "English Rose IV" afloat in Sutherland some years ago. "Victress" sank in the Western Approaches, "Teignmouth Electron" still sadly lies on a beach in the West Indies and "Galway Blazer II" sank in another transatlantic race in 1996 ( with a different skipper)

What became of the other three boats? Chay Blyth's "DytiscusIII", Loick Fougeron's "Captain Browne" and Alex Carozzo's "Gancia Americano"?

As it happens I used to live on the other side of the loch from John Ridgway up in Sutherland in the late 80s. My dad knew him as he used to try and blag stuff from the fish farm occasionally. I'd love to sail up there and go and explore that loch as it's a stunning part of the world.

Yes, Loch Laxford, stunning place. The first time I went there it was as a student/trainee in the first year of John's outdoor centre. I think I was thirteen. It was a great experience. One of the highlights was sailing " English Rose IV" to Handa and back with John and a couple of other kids. I sailed back there a few years ago and had the pleasure of John being a guest on my own boat. Great man. I have often wondered why he alone of that generation of sailor/rower/ adventurers never got knighted.

Because you're about the only person to sail with him who's ever had a good word to say about the experience.
I think to get a knighthood you have to find at least two people to support the idea. Perhaps you should hunt around, there may be another out there.

The fact that Blyth (himself a fellow who seems to elucidate a somewhat, ahem, 'mixed' response) never spoke to him again after they finished their Transatlantic Row speaks volumes.
