A week or so ago my left raw water pump started dripping on...AD41P. An easy seal was in order...but as the engines have 500 hours each i thought i might as well replace the shaft and all seals at the same time.
So yesterday while wind and rain were all about i started taking things apart under my blue tent.
Time to get the pump off...undo several jubilee clips...oh bugger there is always one that has rusted solid..and the nut had rounded...managed to get it off after some faffing about.
Then i had to unbolt the strainer housing...lift that up and fight like hell to get the pipes off the pump.
The undo the pump itself and a careful use of hammer and levers off it came....easy...only took 30 mins.
Take the pump apart...old impeller out...splits all over it..good call to change it. Shaft out...lots of wear on it so again good call to change it. Oil seal looked fine but pulled it out anyway...water side seal was shot...again out it came.
Cleaned up the pump housing and all looked good. Cleaned up the pump mounting on the engine and noticed something...the paint around and below it was bumpy...hmm i thought..lets have a poke about. So 30 mins later i have NO paint left on that side of the engine front....the whole lot had lifted due to salt water corrosion. Another 30 mins alter saw this all cleaned up and ready for a paint another day....my shinny green things now have grey bits...not happy.
Anyway back to the pump. Heated the new bearing up and carefuly got them onto the shaft with a soft hammer, socket and my left leg...yes it did hurt.
New oil seal in...how far does it seat...no idea...search the web..no info..on well that will have to do. Shaft in..spacer and water seal in...cir-clip back on the bearings...new impeller in and new face plate on.
Pump back in place and start up...no leaks and cooling perfect..ran engine to temp and all well. Job done...now to the stb engine...errr..that can wait for another day!!!!
So what did i learn. A really nice looking engine can be hiding rusty parts under it's paint. Bolts and rust do not mix. There is a limited supply of skin on my knuckles. So far no jobs on the engine phase me...with the right tools and basic engine servicing ability most things can be done..it just takes time, money and the body of an Olympic gymnast....well two out of three can't be bad....i know a song about that?
