Wasn't sure where to post this, but hey, scuttlebutt will do !
Does anyone remember or have recollections of The Folly inn, before the dancing on the tables started. Thursday nights-Five and Dimers-(Blueberry Hill), loads of school boats, racing up The Medina under spinnaker, 5 deep on the pontoon and the inside boats hard aground, bouncy castles, open fires, snow, stupid decisions to row to Island Harbour, etc. etc.
Any of the above ! Trying to put together a 'good old days' story of the pub. It's all a bit boring now ! (i.m.o.). No connection with the pub what so ever. Just chatting to an old codger about how it used to be.

My dad camped there as young crew for some rich bloke who was racing a keelboat at Cowes (and staying in a hotel). His tent-mate trod in a huge dog-turd one night and unwittingly smeared it all over the inside of the tent.

Dad's hated camping ever since :D

I've been sailing to the Folly since the late 60's. The first time I remember going inside I was about 7 or 8 and was sneaked into the back bar at an Old Gaffers rally IIRC. My parents had an old Morecombe bay prawner (1908) and the Folly was a nice day sail from Portsmouth if the wind was from the SW.
Alan Cundall (sp?) had just started as HM and there were just a few big yellow buoys to tie between.
I've won a rowing race in the regatta in the mid 70's and my dad came second sculling - winnings £1 for me and £0.50 for him! It was a fairy duckling dinghy and floated in about 2" of water.
I remember the previous pier; I've lugged my kids in buggies along the new pier.

All good memories.....

I went there by dinghy midweek in about 1989, I'm guessing late season, September or so?, camped a little way down the river, or it could have been up river.
They ran out of beer.
I didn't go back for about 5 years.
It was nicer in about 1982, when I first went, IIRC.

Visited last week - walked to Island Marina along rubbish strewn foreshore but did see lots of curlews and oystercatchers and birds that that were neither curlews nor oystercatchers. Thought pontoon expensive ? do they do winter rates?

Talk about The Folly changing - it is now almost a suburb of Bryant Homes Whippingham. Uffa would turn in his grave (ST Mildred's).

Hope the birdies survive.

I remember when it had 2 bars too. Must have been about 91/92ish. Was a proper pub back then.
