The final hotpoint fitting goes

We have looked after Claymore for 9 years now. The previous owner was a washing machine engineer and many of the plumbing, bog, engine and heater fittings had Servis, Indesit or Hotpoint stamped on them. The final one - of Hotpoint origin leaves us this week - think I'll get it stuffed and mounted - (or perhaps shaking hands would do) - amazing how long this has all taken.

If they've lasted that long, maybe there's something to be said about using Hotpoint/indesit/Servis parts for our boats?

Our house was previously owned by Don who worked for the BBC in their props department. He took advantage of the materials which came his way after filming was over. Of course, we never met him as we bought the house after Don had gone to the great Crystal Palace in the sky. But our neighbours have fond memories of him arriving home at weekends in his battered Anglia with a Dr Who set on his roof-rack or a few bits recognised from last weeks Top of the Pops.

So everything looked about right, but we had a kitchen with cabinets just deep enough to take a single can of beans. Don was also an enthusiastic wirer of electrics and was getting the hang of things towards the end, when he clearly decided that bell wire was a poor substitute for used twin & earth, joined in short sections with chocolate block.

He was particularly taken with polystyrene ceiling tiles, and arranged them throughout the house in clever patterns of symmetry. Don lived in every crevice of our house and garden, and was clearly a man of energy and inventiveness. We have several outhouses - one the size of a small pavilion - courtesy of licence payers.

It was with some sadness that, after nearly 10 years of ownership of the house, we faced the prospect of removing the very last bit of Don's handiwork. I simply couldn't bring myself to do it out of respect for the old fella, which is why we still have his tiles in the downstairs bog.

That and the amount of time I spend fixing the boat at the expense of our house and garden...

Hm, although you might feel well rid of the old stuff, but i'm not at all sure your replacements variously marked "Worshipful Company of Mangle Manufacturers" and suchlike are going to be so much more appreciated by the crew, are they?
