I am getting fed up with the reporting on this one. It will not affect existing units. It will not stop you repairing them. It doe snot affect your aeronoid unit. It does not affect those for scienticfic instruments. Just how is this going to affect the sailing community?

[/ QUOTE ] You may have the skill to repair one, but if you don't where are you going to go?

We had great fun with mercury at school. You could tell you were in the physics lab because the mercury in the gaps in the tongue and groove floorboards made them sparkle. But 45 years on, an the mercury is beginning to take its toll - I keep forgetting what I went into the kitchen for, and I can't pot a billiard ball to save my life.

I'm worried about missing other sorts of holes.

[/ QUOTE ]I have a Fitzroy barometer - I suppose the value is going to go up in a few years, rarity value and all that - but our inheritors in life won't have the luxury of a 'proper' barometer. The shops in France have plenty of examples of UK manufactured barometers, they won't in a couple of years time, then. Not many British things succeed in French shops, so one less. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This just reinforces my opinion that we should have never gone into Europe in the first place!

Roll on when the UKIP, or some other UK party takes over.

Your probably right. I wonder if a deal could be struck letting them ban mercury in barometers in exchange for us retaining red diesel and binning the RCD system?

It seems a bit like King Canute telling the sea not to come in.

Mercury is a naturally occurring material. Do they think it will no longer exist now that they have banned it?

Will they be removing the fillings from my teeth next? My dentist tells me there isn't a problem /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Mercury in glass thermometers serve a useful purpose as do the myriad other uses of mercury. If they were putting in place a complete ban similar to that of asbestos there might be some rational reasoning supporting their action but this primarily serves to amplify their incompetence.

It is widely occurring in the natural environment at low levels where fish concentrate it. However the advice is that omega 3 bearing fish is good for us as it helps prevent heart disease and stroke./forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

We are told to make greater use of low energy fluorescing lamps which contain mercury as its good for the environment./forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It's about time we(English) took a leaf out of the Frenhies book and told Eurocrats to stuff it where the grapes dont grow and do our own thing ,traditions in all other euro countries allow for special dispensation or just to ignor Eurocrats until they either come to thier sences or are voted out and replaced but moor broad minded represitives.

Hey Rob, go easy on us europeans, we have a tough life and lousy weather too.....

I spent some time in your wonderful country recently and found that your "powers that be" have some pretty odd views on what constitutes a fair and just society.

"no tree hill" comes to mind as a starter. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Miss McAvan, a Yorkshire MEP, voted for the ban because there was "clear evidence" that mercury in barometers was "highly dangerous".

Who is this witch?

When I read this last night, I had an uncontrollable urge to slap this tart!

Whether her ability would be enhanced by being given a slap is questionable. Her background, as is now the case for many of our elected politicians, lies in politics. We have leaders whose greatest ability lies in getting elected. Unfortunately having grabbed the reins they have less ability in guiding us in a helpful direction.

Her declaration of financial interests amounts to nothing and whilst this perhaps improves her electability it does nothing to give her experience of the realities and practicalities of actually owning, making or running some productive enterprise. Read all about her.

Having a 60 year timber boat, yes it does rather. And I intend to wear blue ensign! There is not a problem with having old mercury barometers, or having them repaired. There will be small restriction in the manufacture of new units, so I don't think the impact will be significant. It doesn't mean that I think the law is sensible. TO be honest it seems like a load of hogwash, but not something that is worth getting worked up about. The rants tend to come from anti EU people who try to blow it up to something it isn't.

About 300 tonnes of mercury is used by industry in the EU each year but just 0.2 per cent of this is used in barometers. Britain's three registered manufacturers had joined forces with those in Belgium and Holland to create the European Barometer Association in an attempt to block the proposals.

The ban excludes essential equipment used in hospitals.

So it is not dangerous in hospitals where patients immune systems are lower than normal?

300 tonnes of mercury is used by industry in the EU each year but just 0.2 per cent is used in barometers.

Erm, (300 x 0.2% ïs 0.6 tonnes) do they really use 1,200lbs in barometers EACH year??????

[/ QUOTE ] The density of mercury is 13.6. So you could use as much as 0.25 kg if your barometer tubing was just 0.5 cm diameter. Which is only around 2400 barometers from 0.6 tonnes.

Lots of words there in that biog, absolutely nothing that indicates any particular training or skill except for the ability to talk (in foreign languages..).
I wonder then if this firm pressure gambit on mercurial issues will prove to be the highpoint or a new low in her non stunning career to date /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Some interesting points here. I share your concern about the professionalisation of politics but I'm not sure what you are saying about the lovely Linda's statment of interests. Does it have to be a qualification for office that one is / has been a business entrepreneur? Are the realities of life somehow clearer if you spend your time making things? I don't know anything about Linda but she seems not to deserve the name calling that appears above.
