Crossing the bar
by Alfred Tennyson

Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have cross'd the bar.

I'm not a great fan of the man but the association of crossing the bar with the end of one's life is certainly very moving.

The old groaner Dylan could pass that off as one of his maudlin ditties. Mind you Bernie, what happened to your pic? Bad reaction to recent birthday?

No its her new diet....

That was clearly written at slack water in calm weather. How about a re-write giving consideration to prevailing conditions where words such as fear / pail / death and phrases such as "Oh lord Im going to miss the Ramsholt" would be used /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It was in reaction to the stream of complaints I have had that my photo was taken decades ago. It wasn't, just a few years ago when my hair was a little shorter. Obviously I have aged several decades in those few years.

So I changed it to reflect my great age. Couldn't find a pic of a fat old crone, so thought the skeleton would have to do for now.

I have, incidentally got a more recent photo, which I tried to load up as an avatar, but don't seem to be able to remember how to do it. It must be my great age.

Like I care ! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Jim,

Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar" was beautifully put to music by Parry - I have it on the iPod (sung by the choir of St Paul's Cathedral).

Cliche perhaps, but I hope it's played at my funeral (whenever that may be) along with Eric Bogle's "Safe in the Harbour", and maybe Dylan's "When the Ship Comes in".
