As many of you will know, Brightlingsea was 'raped' a few years ago with the James and Stone Marina development.

Well, not content with putting just one blot on the landscape, Tendring District Council have now in their infinite wisdom, (in the interests of "Health and Safety") decided to put railings up all the way around the Promenade at a cost of some £50,000.

Having lived in the town for 53 years, I can never recall any accidents on the prom involving people falling down the steps...

However TDC see this as being a good opportunity to spend more of the ratepayers money for little or no benefit to the public at large.

From a sailing point of view, the approach to Brightlingsea is now avoiding windfarms scattered all over the Wallett and soon the Swin as well, the first sight of the town is the monstrosity of glass and stainless steel flats, and the first close up impression will be akin to a low risk prison!

If you would like to help keep Brightlingsea as it is without further damage please sign the on line petition here:

Best check up if the likely railing contractor is somehow related to someone on the council.. could be a classic 'get me cousin to do it' kickback party ;)

I have sent to address book

Please feel free to join

Please help by showing your support in the campaign against the proposed railings by joing the facebook group

"leave our Brightlingsea prom and beach alone"

if you have not already done so, there are also on the group many more addresses that people if they feel strongly enough can write to, at the moment they are in the general wall thread, however i shall be updating them to the information tab ASAP. It is because of local support that this campaign has been so sucsessful, however it is not just Brightlingsea people that are going to be affected any one who sails and especially those that launch their boats from the sailing club side are likely to be effected, plus those that use canoes, kite surfers, windsurfers and kayak users. Basically anyone that uses the promonade for fun on the sea, so please if you have not already done so join the group and show your support. For those that live in Brightlingsea there are also petitions in the shops.

Thankyou for your support.:)

have done the petition so has swmbo

I have done the petition and joined the facebook group.

I think Tendring Council is either 'linked' with contractors due to do the job or are riddled with self importance.

Either way they seem hell-bent on ruining Brightlingsea for everyone.

Railing against Rails Around the Prom !

Oh dear !...As one who spent my formative years either in, on or under (occasionally) Brightlingsea creek I think TDC missed a golden opportunity in allowing the redevelopment of James & Stone yard in the way they did. I dont think anyone would disagree that it needed redevolopment, however it could have been done in a far more sympathetic way to fit in with the town & waterfront.. Still whats done is done !

HOWEVER !! Rails along the prom . The worlds gone bonkers. Some of the best fun I had as a kid was sliding down the concrete on the prom, on a bit of old timber.... We kids used to get a few splinters in our bum & a few cuts & bruises but no serious injuries, and like Cobra I have never heard of anyone falling off the prom..... Hang I tell a fib 1962.. After 2 large ciders and a couple of babychams from the offy my mate Tim did end up in the mud next to Batemans.. Happy Days !

Needless to say I'll sign up !

These Councils are custodians of our heritage. A block of dodgy apartments here, an unsightly rail there. Brightlingsea really could have some very nice sympathetic improvements to make the best of the area and keep it appealing to visitors for years to come.

Right now the council's priorities aren't in the best interests of the town.

I'm hearing a few positive vibes from the Facebook group so fingers crossed people keep the momentum up to protect the place.

And where would the James & Stone Carbuncle be now without the funds ( Rent) from the wind farm Contractors

Ah but....

Whilst the new apartements were rented to the wind farm (which is now built and moving into Operation and Management phase) the contractors are now moving out. So they are now left with second hand apartements, and prices, instead of new ones!!

But at the same time Chris, would YOU choose to live in a slightly upmarket ghetto with an underground car park that drains well below High Water level...whatever the price?

I may be a little biased as I like styling that compliments existing architecture but the build quality is dire and the wate-facing supports are already rusting which, when arriving in the creek, is not exactly an appealing trait for 'executive' apartments.

Brightlingsea's 'Vertical slum in the making' makes the mess of flats around Brixham harbour look quite stylish!
Why do idiotic council planners insist on trying to 'improve' things that just need LEAVING ALONE!!!!
And then to cap it all they have the audacity to hide behind the 'Health and Safety' banner which just degrades all the stuff that needs to be done for genuine safety reasons!!
Petition signed with pleasure!!

Honestly, I think it's a mixture of things. Partly a very short sighted view on gaining public finance. I wouldn't like to suggest less than honest deals took place when granting planning permission for the 'apartments' but I wouldn't like to dismiss it either. Money talks as they say.

Other times they sit in their meeting rooms miles away thinking things like safety railings will improve safety by x% or reduce their liability should someone hurt themselves and want to take legal action.

Just a guess but i'd wager i'm not too far from the truth

build quality

As the safety officer for the windfarm said

"you wouldn't want to live in them"

and his reason was that they were hard to heat and were not well built

I love Brightlingsea - its where I learned to sail and when I finish sailing around Britain its where I would like to end up

but

Bimey what a mess and the railings would be, as my dad used to say

"the giddy limit"

D

I've had a look at the Council website to see where this railing is intended to go, but without success. I understood the "prom" to be either the road in front of the Colne YC which already has a railing, or the path in front of the beach-huts from Brightlingsea SC to Bateman's Tower. Although it would seem rather pointless to put a railing there, I'm not sure that it would be an eyesore, or have I missed something?
