The Chandlers,were they irresponsible?

How exactly does age affect their ability to evade? They can still operate a throttle and a tiller can't they? Have you ever tried to get on a moving boat? Especially one that was being actively steered? Powerful engines don't help much there.

I'm not a pirate, but I'll bet pointing guns at the unarmed yachties makes the "active steering" stop pretty quickly.

Granted it would have taken some nerve to keep it up if the pirates started shooting, but so far the pirates have shown a reluctance to harm their victims. Let's face it, dead hostages don't fetch much of a ransom. Add to that, going any speed in a small boat, particularly if there's a seastate won't make it easy to aim. I won't lump you in with them, but a lot of posters in the thread(s) about the Chandlers have indicated that in their place, they would opt for the Navy types storming their boat, guns a-blazing. Assuming the Chandlers would also take that option, at least they'd only be half as likely to be shot with just the pirates firing.

Not trying to be funny, but the Thames river police, UKBA RIBs, pirates and even the Sea Shepherd lot have little difficulty in boarding moving boats.

In fact, the police and UKBA actually ask you to maintain your speed while they hop aboard.

They ask you to maintain your speed and course because once both boats are doing that then it's almost the same as boarding a stationary boat. If you were going in zigzags and increasing/decreasing speed and doing anything else to make life difficult for them then they'd struggle as i'm sure you can imagine. However, most people are usually rather compliant when someone points a gun at them, I know I would be.
