The British weather has finally beaten me ...

After trying to sail with my twin boys (under 3) and the British weather all this season I have decided to hang up my sails for the time being (I'm afraid that I am usually a visitor to the raggies forum) and come over to the other side (again)!

My wife and I have bought an apartment in Cala D'Or in Mallorca and I am thinking of buying a rib for some fun in the sun.

The reason for the post is not to inform everyone of this momentous decision, but to ask for some advice from knowledgable and experienced forumites.

The cost of mooring in Cala D'Or is high, as is most of Mallorca, and I was thinking of either sharing a boat (possibly even starting a syndicate) or alternatively finding a way of mitigating the cost of the berth, maybe by storage ashore with a launching service?

Does anybody know of boat shares available in this area or have a sports boat/rib that they want to share?

Would anyone be interested in starting a syndicate?

Does anyboday know whether there is a cheaper way of storing and using a sports boat in this area (cheaper than the 7,500 EURO per year they want for an 8 meter berth in Marina De Cala D'Or!!!)

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Cheers

Steve

I can't comment on the actual area but I would say if it's a possibility go for dry storage (i.e. on a trailer).

Over here, births are as rare as rocking horse s**t...I thought launching and retrieving with my boat (approx 1.5 tons) was going to be a nightmare...but after doing it a couple of times, it's quite painless if you take it easy.

You have the advantage of giving the boat a good wash down after use (including flushing your engine), keeping her covered over so less damage from he sun, no weed build up on her bum and no worries when you aren't around that someone will damage her in the marina or she'll suffer from storm damage...etc..etc...etc...

I think it's standard that each yard will have a 4x4 for launching..over here it's around 20 euros for launch and retrieve....monthly rental is normally 70-80 euro's basically 10 euros a meter...for some reason the yard I use is 40 a month all in...to be fair I'm a bit further away from the slip than other yards and it's a little less tarty than some of the others..

If you aren't using your boat every weekend and there is a yard near by then dry storage can make sense.

It might be worth enquiring in Potopetro next door to Cala D'Or. Lots of small boats/ribs are on swinging moorings that you can paddle out to, also a small marina and a launching slip. I would imagine at a fraction of Cala 'Or costs.

Steve,

In the Med you want a boat with lounging area, good sea handling and space when at anchor to dive off etc. Ribs just do not have the lounging space as Magnum found out. Best to get a centre console boat with a front sunpad. Most have deep V hulls and they have an outboard as well.

Just a thought

Paul

Hi Paul, Fair point. I used to have a Jeanneau Cap Camerat 625 WA which I always thought would just the ticket in the Med. Perhaps that or something similar would be a better choice. I am really open to ideas. Thanks for your input.

Thanks GrowingLad, I am going to look into this. Problem is I am not sure there are any slips!! The marina want more or less the same money for storage ashore.

The cost of mooring anywhere in Majorca is high. I know because I moor in Palma myself. There is a marina in Porto Colom which is a bit less swish than Cala d'Or and on the south coast at La Rapita, both of which might be a little cheaper. I agree with the others though. I would have thought that keeping the boat on a trailer and launching it yourself or having it lifted it and out would be cheaper. I would not keep the boat on a swinging mooring though. Gales occur most years in the Balearics and you read about boats being washed up on the shore every time
A RIB would be an excellent choice for exploring the many calas on the E coast of Majorca, particularly as sea conditions can be boisterous on that coast, but it must have a bimini to protect you from the sun and a cuddy cabin with a toilet/holding tank would be very useful. With so many swimmers about in the anchorages, you really shouldn't discharge effluent into the sea and it's prohibited in many harbours
