The breaking of a confidence

Re: Gentlemen

Sorry! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It was just meant as a light-hearted red herring. Or troll? Troll for a red herring, perhaps?

I do not know any of the persons involved and I hope that no one thought that I was seriously suggesting a practical solution /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Somehow, I still believe that the collective sense of humour of this forum goes way beyond that! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Gentlemen

Err

The post was an example of what passes for my sense of humour.

Truth is I'm too idle to use those little yellow things and I detest that rolling about figure thing.

Wasn't having a go at you at all

That's quite all right, Sir. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There do exist people who are convinced that my sense of humour is non-existent! It bothers them ....... doesn't bother me much, though /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was going to include a /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif or /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif but I think that, in this case, I shall resist the temptation.

I'm sure that if we were all sitting around some /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif it would be much simpler. Even then I'd still get into some people's hair and would probably be made to feel quite unwanted. You see, I also have this pernicious habit of smoking a pipe. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Don't worry, my friend! Life is too short to be taken seriously...... I don't even take myself seriously!

Re: Gentlemen

Aarrrrgh

A pipe smoker

I smoked one for nearly 30 years

Gave up at 08:30 on 13th July 2005

Not that I miss it at all ( /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

A pipe is more than just smoking, its a hobby in itself

Which 'big lang floppy-lugged jessie' did you have in mind? And is this long-winded load of baloney some kind of contorted apology....?/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So here's an idea. The pair o' yooz loons gae intae ra pub. Say nothin'. You buy a couple o' pints, and the pair of yooz down 'em. Then he buys a couple o' pints, and yooz neck 'em. Then it's your turn again; an' after that, it's his turn.....

When a' that's done, yooz'll be in no pain, ye'll hae forgot whit it was that ye were gonna say to each ither, ye'll make up somethin' else, then yooz'll hae anither couple o' pints........

And maybe yooz'll come back here and tell us aboot it.

No lexicographer can be expected to include every possible word into a general dictionary, especially when it is a compound and/or scientific word that (fortunately) does not enjoy common usage. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Words are added or removed, from time to time, as they come into or fall out of use. For example, up to the late forties the Oxford Concise edition still included many words of Indian origin, as was to be expected in days of empire. Once empire was over, most of these were removed from the edition, making space for other, more modern, words and expressions. See, in these last 20 years, how many new meanings have become common vernacular, thanks to the world of IT.

Nothing lasts forever; not even I! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

WHO said thanks be for THAT!!!!!????? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Delighted to make your aquaintance - I was born in the first half of the last Century and I can honestly say that conversing with a Malta-based English language buff is a whole new bag of spanners to me.

Likewise, I am delighted that you sound much better today /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I too was born towards the end of the first half of the last century; soon after the war, in fact. I would not describe myself as an 'English language buff' but when I was little, my father's idea of making me practise writing was to copy entire tracts from a dictionary or from a Thesaurus. That was, however, only on the days when we were not speaking Italian, French or Maltese /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe one day we'll be able to discuss all this - and other, more interesting subjects - over some malt. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have never been to Scotland but my daughter visits quite often and she says that it is completely different, compared to the southern part of 'your' island; she likes it much better. Evidently, she has good taste. Now I wonder, where did she get that from? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Having received a letter from Messrs Haddaway Anshitman, solicitors acting for Lord Claymore, I wish to make it clear that His Worthiness has not actually had an extension telephone line fitted to his bilges, and that he still intends using his voice pipe.

Each part of Claymore has a voicepipe connected to the the vessel's chartroom.

That's the fresh air delivery system after Lord Claymore had vented.

Evidenced by the surprised look on his face

Re: The breaking of wind

I'm just getting out of here.

It's not funny any more and I have no desire to be drawn in with one side nor with the other. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Even though I do not know the persons involved, I wish for them to settle their differences. Life is too short to fritter away over 'serious' incidents.

My puerile attempt at defusing seems to have backfired. Maybe some people do prefer it that way. Sad.

Re: The breaking of wind

Calm down, my dears. This all started out with umbrage being taken over the unfortunate demise of one mobile communications device, and now it's being suggested that all those in proximity to the laird when he releases the inevitable digestive pressures that go with a diet of lorne sausage and well-hung grouse should be equipped with anti-flash gear, tin hats and respirators.

Thaty's all a bit unnecessary, especially when it's a fact - little known to be sure - that when his Grace is down in London to bless the boatshow, he slips discreetly off to a gentlemans's emporium just behind Jermyn Street to buy a year's supplier of Oakenshaws Patented Trouser Pomade, guaranteed to deodourise even the foulest emissions resulting from a highland diet rich in fibre, fat and high-proof beverages.

Nae problem

Not peurile at all, but very good - and, OK I admit it, I had to Google 'apophallation' too... Sounds like the title of a film, Apophallation 2.

Don't worry about what's been written - in real life the Lord Claymore has the heavy burden of fertilising the minds of the country's next generation of civic, business, and academic leaders. We like to lighten his load by helping out with the fertiliser from to time.
