Assemble it in the water?
Just maybe in a flat calm, but it's difficult to see how you'd do it if you were in half the boat, trying to plug in the other half, because the half supporting you would be deeper in the water than the empty half. And if it was all bouncing about in a popple, a great way to crush fingers. Good game!
