Hi, can anyone tell me the times not to cross the bar, took the boat out Saturday for the first time, it was about 6.30pm and a bit rough went to the second marker and turned around, was doing about 3000 rpm but only showing about 3.4 knots on the GPS

Hiya Tony - Welcome to the forum

You will find pretty much all the information your require on this web link:

http://www.conservancy.co.uk/water/navigation.asp

and this link:

Always remember: If you don't feel safe doing it, then don't!

Good luck. :)

Probably exactly when you did!

If memory serves me correct, it was a high (5.2metre) Spring on Saturday, and you chose to travel out on an ebbing tide pretty much exactly mid way between high & low water, when the water runs fastest, with a south westerly 5 (gusting 6) blowing

Under such conditions, it will be pretty horrible, and indeed, there was a bit of Coast Guard action there earlier in the afternoon.

I've only once turned back crossing the Bar, but generally whenever there's a bit of a 6 or more blowing, it's not going to be very nice.

However, if you read the books re crossing the Bar, you'd never attempt it! It is nothing like as bad as they make out.
