We headed over to Mermaid Quay this afternoon with the kids and some friends with their kids, moored up quite nicely in quiet gusty winds - only to release once we have all disembarked, push chair loaded etc.. that we managed to moor up to the set of pontoons not connected to the shore !

15 mins later all was sorted and we headed over to Cadwaladers for Ice Cream !

Cheers

Ha! We did exactly the same thing today. There was no non-island pontoon space so we left. Not sure whoever is in charge of the pontoons has completely thought the system through.

Looks like the missing connecting pontoon sections are tied up (hidden away) in the old dock between Wetherspoons and Techniquest.

LOL.
I have asked this before, but why are there ever decreasing pontoons at MQ?
It's as though the Authority don't want boats going there. There should be more space not less.
Note to oneself, check where I tie up before disembarking!

I very often enjoy an hour or two sailing inside the barrage especially midweek when there's hardly any boats. Wouldn't spend the whole day sailing it though.

I've just bought an old Flying fifteen to sail in the bay. Hopefully it will be more suitable than Chausey.

We have to come over from Bristol to get inside the barrage, and love it in there.
After avoiding all the sea serpents and other miscellaneous monsters on the way over that is, reckon they can't keep up at 30 knots, or else they are all to busy chasing Ade Edmundson!
I reckon Mermaid Quay would be a lovely place to be tonight, with a SanMiguel in hand of course!

You reckon? I gave up working on the boat.It was bouncing around and windy! I guess pretty cold as soon as that sun went too.I'd rather be in Bristol in the shelter.

We can't complain. The barrage has a lot more pros than cons. Its no hassle locking in or out and its free. There are no speed limits, harbour patrol don't interfere, pontoons are secure, its safe and its not very busy amazingly!I wonder how many boats there are in total land side of the barrage?

A few hundred....

I wonder how many never go out

Well Penarth has 340 berths and Cardiff 350, so that's nearly 700 berths just for the marinas... of course they're not full. But when you add in the two yacht clubs the total number of boats must be over a thousand I'd guess. And how many never go out.... over a thousand I'd guess! It never fails to amaze how quiet the waters off Cardiff are on a sunny day.

Cheers

People hang on to the dream, even though they had no time to sail. I hate to see green abandoned boats.

I noticed it getting busier lately, but over the winter I only ever saw fishing boats outside of the barrage.
