A friend has recommended that I try this forum. I have to get to Patagonia by the end of this year; an alternative to flying is to sail - my friend recommended The Ark as a starting place which apparentley will get me to the Carribean. Can anyone tell me how I might go about getting a place as an extra deck-hand on this journey or does anyone know of a vessel that could get me all the way South.

I'm a social documentary photographer, living on Anglesey, travelling to document the Welsh settlers for a book and exhibition.
Many thanks.

Try posting on the Arc (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) Forum later in the year. The Arc leaves the later part of November with the trade winds.

Oh, you meant the ARC - I thought at first the Ark must be the name of a cruise ship!

Good luck finding something.

Re: The AR and sailing to Buenos-Aires

I will suggest to go first to the Canaries Islands..

The ARC is going to Caribean and this is not a good option.. either in Canaries or in Mindelo harbour (Cap Verde islands).. you will find plenty of boats going to Brazil.. then in Salvador de Bahia, you will have very good chance to find a boat going south..

Dunno if you're hoping to get closer to Patagonia by boat than Buenos Aires, but it might be tricky. There's very little in the way of yachts in the Puerto Madryn area (the nearest port to Trelew and Gaiman which is presumably where you're heading for). On the other hand, there is a steady procession of cruise liners (including Russian). You may be able to hop on one of these in BA.
p.s. Not many Welsh left in Trelew, but plenty of 'Welsh teas' to be had in Gaiman!

Many thanks for reply. Do you know of any cruise liners going south that would leave from Europe? I'm hoping to work my passage otherwise it seems that the Canaries are the best place to catch a sailing boat?
