I bought one of the ones that you plug into a cigarette lighter socket a couple of years ago & I reckoned it was a fab quality product then & it has been a wonderful godsend.I have really hammered it & it has done sterling work but about six months ago it developed a rattle.Clearly something had broken loose inside. It carried on working perfectly alright until the day before yesterday when one of the wires leading into it became severed.
I took it apart as clearly it should be simple enough to repair but on parting the case I was surprised to see a capacitor type thing (it might be a transistor you know the sort of thing but I know very little about electronics) about the size of a cigarette filter was the thing that was rattling around inside. The question is why has'nt this caused it to conk out :ambivalence:Clearly it dos'nt seem to need it.

It is black with a grey stripe along it & is marked 35v 470uF.It also seems to be called +secon (in a trade type logo) & says -40+105 (degrees,I don't know how to do the symbol) C.

The "470uF" means it's a capacitor. I'm not an expert, but I think it may be to do with suppressing RF noise generated by the motor. So it's still working without it, but possibly interfering with nearby radios / TV / etc.

Damn that means I won't be able to do the vacuum cleaning while going through Portsmouth Harbour entrance ;)
Thanks for the info.

Yep as Pete says its a capacitor. 470μF ( 470 microfarads) is its capacity

You can do a degrees symbol by copying in from the "character map" or by typing Alt + 0176 but generally not used these days. Temperatures just being expressed with an upper case C, F or K ...... eg 20C, 68F or 293K

BTW The μ symbol, Greek letter mu, can be copied from the character map or Alt + 0181

My research indicates that if you have a decent anti virus, the machine will continue to function, serendipitously my XP machines hard drive packed up a few months ago, so was forced to transfer to windows 8, so have not been able to test this theory
