The Admiral of the Medway Cruise.
Every year Rochester Cruising Club, founded in 1905,organises a cruise on the River Medway in association with the Rochester Oyster and Floating Fishery to commemorate a charter first granted to the city in 1446 and followed with an act of Parliament in 1728 by George II.
The event held over two days during June/July involves a beating of the bounds from the upper limit of the fishery at the "Hawkestone" on the first day and with the second day spent going down to Sheerness.
Most of the local motorboat clubs, yacht clubs and marinas take part in one form or another.
Included in the down river cruise is a stop at the site of HMS Bulwark which blew up during November 1914 with the loss of 727 lives,a wreath is cast into the water and this is repeated again at the wreck of the SS Montgomery out in the Thames estuary.
This year as usual there will a group of boats coimg down river from above the lock, this should give something like 70 to 80 boats taking part at some point. On the Sunday many of the boats will call in at Queenborough to raft up for refreshments, before heading back up to Rochester for supper and more refreshments.
Should be a good weekend.
