\"That\'s another fine mess....

hi

Like lots of others, judging by the number of posts, I have been struggling with a leaky sea water pump.

As a starting point I scoured this forums search pages and posted queries and was grateful for some helpful replies and the time, trouble and patience of all the contributors. But like always I learnt most from bitter experience.

I started off full of bright eyed optimism whipped off the cover and impellor pulled out he old seal, using the electricians small screwdriver ( as recommended, ... thanks) fitted my new seal (from Jabscoshop.....thanks) after first smearing the outer edge of the seal with Hylomar.( as recommended....oops ! )

As it turned out the b****** was still dripping so there then followed a period of struggling to get the pump off my MD2020 ( my sympathies to anyone else who has to do this job. I had to extend my toolkit and arms for that achievement).
The shaft was knackered. So armed with my new two legged gear puller ( thanks again ) I stripped down the whole pump, shaft, bearings, circlips, gear, locknut, the lot.
A voyage of discovery.

Then with the parts ordered from Jabscoshop (thanks again) I confidently turned to the only part of the job I had recent experience of, removing the recently replaced seal. But....

Hylomar had welded the rubber to the bronze. It needed to be scraped off. All the care I had taken the first time not to scratch the surfaces and now the only way to try and remove the welded rubber was by scratching and scraping.

It would have been impossible to change the seal in situ, and I was fortunate to have discovered the mistake when I had the pump on the bench with nothing but the bronze casing and the rubber seal, since the only method that finally worked was to burn the rubber off with a blow torch!!

So the moral of this tale and the experience I wanted to contribute is ........
never ever use Hylomar on water pump seals.

Understand your frustration, but *why* were you putting a gasket compound on a seal? ... they are only ever fitted with a smear of oil (if appropriate to the application) or other suitable lubricant. I assume someone here must have mentioned it, but a check on the website of the product you mention might have saved you some effort. IMHO. Hope your repairs go OK.

jimi,

Yeah, nice product, but hard bit on my boat is removing the engine cover......pump cover takes 10 seconds with a pozidrive ........ what's it got to do with the shaft seals?

Hylomar

Ah, but there's different types of Hylomar, from memory the blue is the non setting stuff. But why use it on a pump seal in the first place, I'd have given it a smear of slicone grease or waterproof grease.

Wasn't pointing finger at you. You just happened to be in the thread.

Point was that if the leak was from a faulty pump cover then if one were going to replace it then IMHO one might as well replace it with a speedseal. It certainly took a lot longer than 10 seconds to remove the pump cover on one's Yanmar until one replaced it with a speedseal.

Re: Not guilty! (I think)

The only guilty one is me for my ignorance.
But Hylomar was recommended elsewhere in that thread to use on your new seal. No doubt that advice was given in good faith.
The point of my post was to make sure no else makes the same mistake as me and to remind every one that amongst the excellent advice on this forum occasionally there is a monumental bum steer.

Re: Not guilty! (I think)

I have used blue Hylomar extensively in engine rebuilds, and with things like timing covers. Typicaly I slap the gasket inplace on the cover with hylomar then oil the other surface

Nothing wrong with Hylomar. (In the right place)
I have recently used it when reassembling my outboard to supplement a Gasket.
Just dont use it on your water pump seal, IMHO.
