That sailing boat cargo boat collision on Southampton Water

The problem is he will have to answer to his insurers so we are unlikely ever to actually get the complete picture.

Read any col reg thread on scuttlebutts and you will find the answer, although a slightly improved attitude recently compared to 5 years ago there are still a surprising number of solent sailors who feel they have the right to stand on and even more of a concern is some believe it is their duty to stand on without a choice.

2007 attitudes to standing on

2012 attitudes to standing on

Much better but there are still some very worrying responses about having to stand on and alright to sail within a few hundred meters of a ship.

So you are saying he deliberately sailed into the path of that damn great ship believing he was right to do so under collregs? But that is just supposition on your part?

I wondered if there was something jammed on the boat etc...

You should know me well enough to realize that I dont usually post without foundation ;)
Someone claiming to know contacted me, nothing jammed as far as I am aware.

Oh

Atlanta of Chester and the tanker Hanne Knutsen off Cowes at the start of Cowes week last year.

Skipper /owner of Altanta has friends in high places I think.
Rumoured IIRC that the whole crew were high ranking RN officers (either serving or retired)

Hanne Knutsen heading towards Hamburg if your are in the area!

Did the MAIB investigate this?

Really? That's surprising. I'd been waiting for the report to finally appear to find out what the hell they thought they were doing.

Do we know why the MAIB decided not to investigate? I don't really buy the conspiracy theories unless someone can provide at least a little bit of evidence.

No mention of it at all by MAIB - the MCA say they were informed. There has been some talk of Southampton VTS having a report but they haven't published anything. It all went very quiet.

Edit:

This paragraph was in this years (2012) Cowes Week "Notice of Regatta":

"Cowes Week Limited has been assisting Associated British Ports (ABP) with their investigations into the collision over recent months and their report will be published shortly."

What do you expect to see in a report ?

raggie sails in front of a ship which is clearly restricted in ability to avoid hitting it.

Do VTS have the power to fine the idiot ? all he has to say is something jammed and he will get away with it leaving all the other plonkers thinking they too can sail in front of a ship, it is probably best left, the boat suffered adequate damage, I would say lesson well learnt !

Otherwise all I can see coming out of an investigation is the banning of sail alone in the shipping channels, compulsory use of engines and crossing at 90 degrees is most likely outcome.
