I understand why you don't paint anti-foul containing Copper right up to the (aluminium) outdrive but is it actually necessary to leave a gap that the critters can then stick to?

Put another way: Can you paint the 'safe' outdrive anti-foul (Trilux etc.) off the edge of the outdrive and onto the transom to meet the copper containing hull anti-foul; thereby eliminating the gap? I'm assuming that as the outdrive anti-foul contains no copper there will be no circuit created.

Don't waste your time. The favoured outdrive AF is useless in still water anyway

That is exactly what you are supposed to do.
I use the Seajet product myself and they stay pretty clean.
Apparently different AFs work better in different areas.
