Dick, just a quick word of thanks for again reminding readers that Ellen McArthur's boat
is 22ft shorter than Francis Joyon's.

Its been a full two days since you last mentioned this, and a staggering three days since the date before that.

Glad someone is keeping an eye open.

Maybe they should have round the world records for every length there is. Maybe McArthur should get someone to build her one 1ft longer than Joyon's. Isn't it all getting a bit boring? With the backup and electronics they've got these days my labrador could sail round the world!

Labradors are not renowned for their climbing abilities, a skill that both the Dame and Joyon have had to demonstrate in their circumnavigations.
Methinks you do yourself a misservice in belittling their exploits.

"Labradors are not renowned for their climbing abilities!"

Apart from the one that accompanied us up the Parson's Nose route on Crib y Ddysgul in Snowdonia, and the one that climbed the Idwal Slabs /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But not including the one that came to grief on Trevallen in Pembroke /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm sure your lab is a very good sailor and I'm sure the electronics are a great help, but neither sail the boat.

Sailing offshore is what it is and doing it alone in the southern ocean is something else, especially single handed.

If you have done it then please offer your opinions, perhaps after you've described your ocean sailing experiences?

Ian

Methinks you are talking utter rubbish. Lets see you take your Contessa round the world non stop singlehanded.
It is people like Dame Ellen and Francis Joyon who make the human race what it is. If it was up to you we would all still be living in trees saying "Oh its a bit boring down there"

Setting a record is all about "pushing the envelope". Dame Ellen's boat was designed for her as the largest she felt she could handle and beat the existing record. Obviously Francis Joyon felt that he could handle a boat 22feet longer. His idea is to beat the existing record, which it looks like he is going to do by miles.
People doing these records should be admired by all sailors everywhere. They are anything but boring.

I do hope "Kingsley" has a Contessa as well, otherwise I feel unjustly slighted and may be forced to protect my (and my boat's) honour. If you fill in your biograph, I shall send my seconds round to arrange time, place and weapons. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

If I understand you correctly I should admire these people because they are attempting to better a record. Why?

Anything but boring? Ho hum, yawn.

Do you find other achievements boring, or the raising of aspirations and spirits?

They are pushing the boundaries, setting new standards, have inspired many sailors and non-sailors alike. If they stop just one kid from becoming a couch potato and give them the impetus to achieve something significant in their life, it will be worth it. IMO.

Pessimist about sums it up /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, Ellen had an average speed of 12.66 knots, you try driving a 75ft catamaran in the dark at 24knts in the southern ocean -Joyon is about to smash the record he will almost certainly be quicker than Orange fully crewed record in 2002. As for back up and electronics Joyon has very little he has reduced weight by not having a engine (which is perfectly allowed as is the length of his vessel.) these people are heroes who break through all the H and S bull@@@@ to show us what is about to be alive - go back to your armchair you Muppet - and I will lay anyone bet Ellen will build a faster /bigger boat and break the record witnin five years

No pal - the sad bit is having to resort to name calling. As for heroics - tell me about it - I've been there and I've done it - and if you have to know it was in 1976, singlehanded, in a Vertue - yes it was incredible, yes it was scary, no I didn't crave celebrity status. I took 3 years to do it so it wasn't non-stop which I admire - what gets on my t1ts is all the razamatazz from people making a business of it. Heroes are people like RKJ - real heroes.

It's a forum and you are allowed to express an opinion!! as for RKJ I think you will find he is a huge supporter of Ellen and Francis and yes he is a true hero on which i have posted in the past

"all the razamatazz from people making a business of it. Heroes are people like RKJ - real heroes"

What has he done in sailing that is significantly different from the others, apart from being the first/oldest/best spoken? He was part of the biggest razamataz sailing race of its time, he has made a living from books and films of his sailing exploits.

I am certainly not belittling his achievements, but I bet you he would be the last to descibe himself as a hero, and I bet he is as impressed as anyone by the exploits of the current generation

"If you have done it then please offer your opinions, perhaps after you've described your ocean sailing experiences?"

So forumites can't venture an opinion about economic policies unless they've been chancellor of the exchequer? The Lounge would be a bit thin.
