Thanks for all the advice on buying a sportsboat -- including those who highlighted suitable boats for sale... I'm very tempted, but having no storage at home, my plan is to spend the winter exploring the options a bit more and buy spring next year.
Given my first year at least will be spent close to shore in fine weather, the lesser purchase costs and extra seating of bowriders may still swing it.... especially as it seems that the received wisdom is that for one reason or another, you don't keep your first boat for very long anyway!!
Took the family for a stroll in Lymington yesterday and saw a Rinker bowrider at the Ancasta brokerage -- I was surprised at how roomy a 19' boat can be... this particular one was just out of my price range, but it did make me think that I wouldn't need anything bigger for starters (unless it was at the right price!).
Thanks again.... I'll no doubt be looking for some more views on the relative merits of various manufacturers and purchase routes (e.g. private vs broker) in the near future!
(PS> It's odd that there seems to be nowhere locally you can charter a sportsboat for the day/week (having shown your ICC certificate of course). I'm sure loads of people would pay handsomely -- those who want to extend the reach of their holiday out into the water and folk like me who want to 'try before you buy').
