Your idea of drilling down the side of the broken stanchion base worked - eventually! I also .needed a hammer, a bar, a bradawl, pliers molegrips and a blowlamp. Oh plus a string of curses. Al I need now is the new stanchion.

About 2' tapers at the top with a chunky knob on the end, holes for 2 lifelines. I'll see if I can take s piccy.

If youve done what I think youve done.. ie remove Stanchion from a corroded and split deck post

I found it quite easy with an angle grinder to cut slot in post and bash off using a cold chisel

I changed three on my westerly so far..
New ones aint cheap tho..

Nah, nothing that easy! Stanchion had broken off flush in s sound base, no room for grinder inside the base. No suitable stanchions available.

Finally got wifi acces on the netbook, so have atached a piccy,

Managed to get a new bit welded on the bottom today, the guy's made a nice job of it & even put a strengthening alloy sleeve inside.
