Your idea of drilling down the side of the broken stanchion base worked - eventually! I also .needed a hammer, a bar, a bradawl, pliers molegrips and a blowlamp. Oh plus a string of curses. Al I need now is the new stanchion.
 
If youve done what I think youve done.. ie remove Stanchion from a corroded and split deck post

I found it quite easy with an angle grinder to cut slot in post and bash off using a cold chisel

I changed three on my westerly so far..
New ones aint cheap tho..:mad:
