Thanks to all, for the advice and general wisdom that seems to be available when one takes the time to trawl through the plethora of posts available on this site.

Thanks to this, I was able to devote my first weekend of cleaning to productive methods and recommended products, hopefully with out taking the gel coat off. When I left yesterday it was looking pretty good...........

This is my first boat, and it's on the Norfolk Broads where we already had a mooring. It's a modest 21ft Check Marine Sabre or Kite with a 40hp Honda out board.. I've never heard of it, but we love it.

Now my question, a large number of private boats on the Broads fly a red ensign. Should I have one of these ?

Thanks,
Michael.

welcome to the wonderful world of boats

Ensign ..... up to you.

If you were hopping across channel etc. to foreign lands and not staying on UK inland waterways - then of course that is a different matter.

Re: The Red Ensign

From the RYA booklet 'Flags and Signals':-
This (the Red Ensign) is the particular flag of the British merchantman and, as yachts are classed as merchantmen, they are entitled to wear the Ensign under the terms of the Merchant Shipping Act.
By the same Act, a vessel over 50 tons gross is compelled to wear her 'colours' when entering or leaving a British port and all vessels (unless registered as fishing vessels) must wear their proper national colours when entering or leaving a foreign port.
A registerd yacht is entitled and required to wear the Red Ensign, and for an unregistered yacht it can be assumed that although not 'entitled', she can and should wear the Red Ensign on all occasions when it is proper to show the national colours.

In short then, on the Broads you can if you want.

If you do you will find a guide to the customs and etiquette in the RYA booklet.

You may also find some interesting stuff on the Flag Institute web site especially if you have an interest in vexillology.

We will also now be bombarded with posts from those who believe the customs and etiquette surrounding the flying of Ensigns, burgees and other flags is a load of rubbish.

After the hassle that a certain Spanish mp caused regarding 'defacing' our traditional red ensign with the E.U. stars, I personnally think that everyone should fly the flag and be proud not only of its heritage ,but that we won the right to keep it 'star free'. Would you not tend to agree?

Yes I'll agree with that
